    hi all

    Audi A4 B6 1.9 TDI PD130 - AWX engine code

so car was over heating du to coolant loss whenever i put my foot down over a couple of miles, ive had the front end off and there was visable leakage from the water pump so got to it and put new belt kit and water pump on the car

all seemed fine around the doors i did loose a little water but i thought that was just the engine finding its level due to air blocks and the system being drained

so i topped it up and went out for a good drive after about 10 miles on the motorway doing about 80mph the temp shot up to 110c so i backed off and it fell straight back down to normal running temp (90c) - i pulled over to check the coolant as i got a warning from the dash and i had lost some coolant, not as much as i would loose before i done the water pump but i had lost some and it was very hot with lots of pressure in the system

its done this a coupe of times now and i cant put my finger on what it my be

heres what ive done so far -

    t/belt kit
    w/pump
    coolant temp sensor
    thermostat

    any advice is appreciated

    thanks,

    mick

The only thing I would suggest is change the stat again, even new one's can be bad, failing that it could be the head gasket, you'll need to pressurize the cylinders up to check for bubbles in the header tank.

sorry for sounding stupid but how do i do that ?? is it just a case of getting the car up to temp and watching for bubbles ??

    thanks

after some reading through the forums i have took it out for a drive and the bottom hose is stone cold whilst the top is hot - when doing the water pump it was evident that the previous owner has used rad weld could this be a blockage or faulty thermostat ?

Could be blocked somewhere, give it a good flush through,to pressure test the cylinder head you'll need to take the glowplugs out and use a dummy glowplug with some compressed air to pressurise each cylinder up.

What you describe is the classic symptom for an 8V PD TDI head gasket leak.

well today i have flushed the whole system and i have no blockage also put a new stat in and its exactly the same - cold bottom hose and water boiling in the header tank - only thing left is head gasket, ive got no oil or water mixing am i right in saying its drawing in air through the broken gasket causing air locks and stopping circulation ?

Yes, it only happens under load, blows all the water out of the expansion tank.
