    Hi everyone,

I just replaced my car for a couple of meters, and after turning off the engine, a decent amount of white smoke appeared from underneath the front of the car. I opened the engine hood, but there was nothing obvious to see. I must say it smelled like a "burning smell".

    Did anyone see this before?

    Thanks,
    Sven

Q7 - is it not the auxilliary diesel heater (Webasto) smoking away, was pretty common fault on the older Touran's

It was on the front, right side? This is where the auxilliary diesel heater (Webasto) sits.

Yes, indeed. Is this a fault or "expected behavior"?

    Thanks!

on the toureg and Q7 it sits behind the front right hand wheel arch IIRC, but I don't know where the exhaust leads to. when the combustor coil breaks down they smoke like mad, but can also lock themselves out and stop working. I unlocked a pals Q7 heater last winter as it had locked out on low fuel level. The touran heaters were prone to smoking and a lot them were locked out but most owners never knew they were there, let alone if they worked or not, the exhaust cracked and leaked on my 2004 touran. I don't think they are particularly easy or cheap to fix, bit of a PITA!

If you do not have one (as far as I know you do not in UK), you have an electric one, as per VAG manual:

"On vehicles with diesel engine which are not fitted with an auxiliary/supplementary heater, an electric supplementary heater is always fitted. Heat energy is supplied to the air immediately after it leaves the heat exchanger of the heater and air conditioning unit "

I do have the auxiliary heater, it's an EU equipped model. Smoke didn't appear again...so let's see how it goes.

Maybe this was the very first time this fall/winter it started to switch on and in this case they usualy smoke a little bit.

You can check the supp. heater. The exhaust goes straight down, it should be a "silver pipe". If you switch on the car from cold and wait couple minutes and it is cold outside (no clue at which temp it switches on, in other make it is 5C deg.) you can put your hand under the exhaust pipe (do not touch the pipe it can be very hot). If you fell hot gas coming out of the pipe the heater is working.

By the way do you have auxilliary heater or supplementery heater? The aux heater you can switch on by remote control on the key, the supplementery heater is controled by the car you cannot switch on or off.
