This is my first post, so Hello to everyone on here, it's great to be able to ask questions of you fello Vag owners.

I have had my 2000 2.8 Quattro Avant for a little over a week, i first noticed it was dropping a little oil but as my drive, and the road i live on are on gradients it is hard to gauge where it's coming from.

I parked it nose up the slope and then went for a little drive. At the other end i could smell and see oil smoke coming up from the rear offiside of the engine, it soon went and i wont park her that way up again!

Although i am concerned as it seemed to be a lot of smoke and hadn't been parked up for long.

Any ideas where this may be coming from? It's so cramped even after i took out the air intakes i just couldn't see anything. When i look behind the offiside wheel i can see a line where the oils been dripping when parked on the level.

    Hope this is enough description.

    Thanks
    Nathan

I have had an A4 and an A6 with this engine and both have suffered to a degree. At the back of the RH (looking forward) head there is the device that alters the relative cam timing between the two cams. The is also one on the front of the LH head but that doesn't drip on the exhaust! The oil leaks are probably from the join between the cylinder head and that device. However this is often a symptom and not the cause! This engine has a suction pump to remove crankcase gasses and this appears to have a relatively poor effective life and once it drops in efficiency I guess the engine pressurises enough to cause minor leaks. See link below on how to change the suction valve. However once a leak has started it is likely that changing the suction valve alone may not cure it without a new gasket as well. See attached thread for instructions.

I have bought the tool to remove said device and have the gaskets but have never got round to doing the job! On my A4 I also found that if I stopped using Mobil1 the leaks became insignificant!
