I'm going to fit my new fuel filter rather than muck around checking the pipes are the right way round on the other. The biggest issue will be whether I can genuinely tell which is the correct pipe for which port... we'll find out when I get the car in the air

I think the feed and return are on the wrong way around, I can't find proof but I am sure the blue clips denotes feed and so that point should go onto the connection marked VL.

Right, I'm going to have a crack today. I'm not going to jack the car up (i'm on the work car park), but rather drop the filter down so I can just about see and access it. Currently, I can't locate the little clip button to release the fuel hose. So, Torx 25 at the ready, set of needle nose although I hope I can do it by hand first. Let's see how I get on

Gahh, what a pain. Stopped in my tracks. Despite releasing the screw that holds the housing together, I couldn't get the fuel filter to really manoeuvre much, other than sideways. What I really wanted was it to be below the fuel filter housing, that way I could have a better look that those fuel filter hose clips. There's a line that runs across, I'm wondering whether to release the huge hex bolt which holds it in your face.

Suffice to say, those fuel hose clips are a mare to get off. I'm going to have a look at some fuel filter tools at Halfords, but tbh, this job is really winding me up now and the smell is getting worse too. It was unbearable yesterday. I dread to think how much fuel I'm losing too. Also, if I'm putting any strain on the pump. As far as I see it, I've got to get it done this weekend, so Sunday, I might bang it on the ramps, as high as possible (never tried reversing up ramps before) and with a bit of luck things will be so much easier Why can't life be simple?

It is how cars are these days, really really award to work on, it drives me mad how much more complex my job has become in the last 35 years, it WAS simple back in the early 80's, but not anymore. The most complex cars I used to work on in those days were THE Audi Quattro and 200 quattro's which were THE most complex cars you could imagine apart from a Jag V12 I had to rebuild; now they are comparatively simple things to work on compared to a 6C Polo! Added to the complication of the cars is the shear variation of spares, how on earth all make garages cope I have no idea, we have four people here fighting all day long to get the right parts here on time for three workshops and mail order just on VAG and we have ALL the systems imaginable but it’s still a constant nightmare. People who know nothing about this trade simply don’t understand how complex and stressful it is.

Oh, I totally respect how hard it is for you guys. I've been driving a Lupo diesel and enjoying the relative simplicity of the car. Fuel hoses are held by those spring clip things that you can just open with pliers. They were easy to remove and most people end up changing them to jubilee clips anyway. This is a whole different level of complexity and let's be honest, it's old by modern standards. Would a fuel hose tool do it?

I'm sure it's entirely possible someone has mixed up the connections. Diesel fuel filters are on the whole straight forward compared to petrol as normally they're located in the engine bay (apart from an Audi A2) which is recessed under the passenger side towards the back and a nightmare to change. I always tape off the connectors with coloured insulated tape so I know what goes where.

Good luck with the repair and I hope you get it sorted soon.

It's not that I have a problem getting on the floor though, it's the fact that the clips seem to be impossible to remove (at least without breaking them).

I'm going to try blag a morning off work to have a crack at it. Maybe Wednesday.
