    Hi guys

looking for some help diagnosing a problem on a 2008 Golf Match 1.9 (BXE) 105

Slow to start, in that you need to crank it for a few seconds more before it fires up, once started runs and drives perfectly.

    No EML.

Plugged in into VAG-COM which showed up 012295 camshaft position sensor (G40) P3007-000- No signal- Intermittent.

Original timing belt, never disturbed. Fitted a new Lucas camshaft sensor and tried clearing code, kept reappearing.

Unplugged sensor and checked continuity of wiring from underneath air box to sensor socket. Discovered that one wire had broken in half in wiring loom due to it coming into contact with the gearbox. Re-joined the wire and again checked continuity, all seemed fine. Thought I had it sorted.

Tried clearing code, no joy. Keeps reappearing immediately

Wondering if someone can help shed some light on how to sort this. Has the fact that one wire has been earthing off the gearbox perhaps blown something internally in the ECU?

Is there any fuse governing this?

How can I diagnose it further?

What voltage/ resistance should be on each of the 3 wires feeding the sensor?

If I do need to get an ECU, does it need to be reprogrammed to the car?
Do I also have to change the key, immobiliser etc etc?

Any help much appreciated as I have it sold to a customer and I need to get it sorted ASAP

    THANKS

dude, original timing belt, never disturbed. this is disturbing, especiallly since you are selling it. it should be due its second about now. get that done then continue with this other fault.

    Check wiring to ECM.
If it's good likely a sensor fault.
Before renewing I'd be scoping signal to confirm there isn't a timing issue/cam sync error.

    Thanks mate

Timing belt was never touched and original belt and pulleys/tensioners.

Removed original VW cam sensor. Fitted new Lucas unit. was showing; no signal 012295

Then I discovered one of the 3 wires feeding the sensor had broken in half around the starter area. after soldering this back together I now have continuity on all 3 wires back to the ECU.

When I try to clear the fault code it just keeps reappearing.

Have you checked the wires for shorting (to ground/positive/each other)?

I did and everything seems ok.

    One wire is a ground
One seems to be dead regardless of ignition on or off
3rd wire becomes live when ignition is on.

I'm wondering if perhaps there is another wire broken now, maybe from the crankshaft sensor????

Going to strip open the loom again and check every single wire individually for continuity.

    Will keep you posted

You were correct in your diagnosis! Car is now starting as it should.

Made a trip to the breakers this morning for a used camshaft sensor. Fitted it, cleared the fault codes and it started first pick of the key.

Turns out both the original VW sensor and the new Lucas unit were faulty in the end. Whether or not they blew due to the broken wiring issue on the loom is anyone's guess.

Moral of the story is never assume.

    Thanks for your help!
