    Afternoon all!

I own a 2003 A4 TDI 130BHP Quattro. 10K ago I had it fitted with a full set of Goodyear F1 GSD3 tyres. I then had a full geo done by my local VW garage. Having done roughly 10k miles both tyres on the passenger side are totaly scrubbed out on the outer edge. Overall wear is also pretty bad but still legal.

I check pressures once a fortnight.

Needless to say I am gonna need another full set of tyres but I am reluctant to go for the F1s again because of this. They are great tyres to drive on but I cant live with a repeat of this rapid wear.

Any tips or ideas on a good tyre for this car would be very welcome. I still want something quite grippy that can be forgiving in terms of spirited driving.

    Cheers in advance...

I'd be taking the car back to the VW garage to re check the alignment!!!

F1s are great tyres. I've had them on a previous car and did 16,000 miles on them with a couple of trackdays and they still had good life in them and wore evenly.

Do you go round alot of roundabouts?

I have the original fit tyre (Bridgestones) on my Avant and they are cack. It squirms when accellerating in the wet and I did a pretty good drift round a roundabout without prevoking it or going fast!!!

Unfortunately to have good grip all round the tyre compound tends to be softer and thus wears quicker. 10-15K miles is a good mileage for these type of tyres and application.

You may find some are better at wear but they maybe not as good a grip.

Hi, thanks for this dave. The dealers have offered to do another geo for a low low price. However in 10k it could have been knocked out by any number of things. The print out from when they did it originally suggested they had done it pretty much spot on (within reason).

The quattro A4 holds corners really well and I do tend to abuse this charactristic of the car when cornering. It's such fun!!! So I am guessing I am mostly to blame.

I still want some better wearing tyres though. Some say Michelins are really good. Having had poor results from conti and dunlop I am thinking that Michelins are my only option.....

    Hi there

I've had a set of those on an old S3 and they soon went, maybe my right foot to blame but 3mm of tread in a couple of thousand miles is poor.

I'm now in a 2.5 tdi quattro and decided to try running on Toyo Proxes T1-R's(205/55/r16) as they'd been recommended by several mates.

(I got them off blackcircles for £66.53 a corner. If you select promotion code and put nhs in it gives you a 5% discount(on all tyres)).

I've done about 1000 miles on all types of road from country to motorways. I've just measured tyres front and back still on 8mm, lower end of 8mm though. First couple of hundred miles they felt a bit skitish when cornering but they've settled in now. Loads of grip, not driven in the rain as yet to see if the radial grove actually works but I'm impressed with them and they feel as good as the goodyears and look to have better life so far.

You may want to look here for more opinions on tyres posted about a month ago:-

    Hope that helps, Mellie.

I have found that the shoulders do go on these if you drive it hard in the bends due to the weight of the car..

What PSI do you run them at??

I always run mine at 35-36 PSI allround.

I use TOYO Proxes T1-S, (225/40-18) and find them excellent.

Tyre wear is pretty good, although i need to replace the fronts soon, due to my driving style and a recent remap

I got the tyres around 4 months ago, and have covered over 10K in that time (both town and motorway driving). The rear tyres are at about 7mm, so hardly any wear at all.

It goes without saying that the tyres are better in the dry than the wet, but still perform well. Toyo have just produced a new compound, and it's s'posed to be the dogs danglies in the wet and dry, called the T1-R.

I can reccommend the toyos and decent stockist (wheelbase) if your interested.

Having done some research today I am thinking about a full set of Michelin Primacy HPs.

They are more expensive than goodyear NCT5s & F1s but from what I gather are longer lasting and still a good performance tyre.

    Anyone used these?

Not sure what tyre size you are running skymaster, but, I've been running Michelin Primacy 205/55 R16 on my TDi sport and they have worn very well. I've done 12k on them and they have barely worn 3mm off all over. Ever so slightly more wear on the middle but as they start with more tread depth there it's no issue. I run mine at 34 psi. I don't do major cornering though! that could be why they have lasted.

After the Primacys run down I'm going to get HPs. A mate has them as says they are very good. Audi driver magazine did an article on them too.. they came out out very good all round!
