I have a 2005 GT TDI 2.0 and the emissions garage light came on. I took it to the garage and they said the egr valve showed a fault and cleared it. The light came back on the next day.

So, do I pop a new EGR on or I am leaning towards a bypass and doing away with it. The car is on 104K.

Does anyone know of a tuner in MK/Northampton area or Redditch that can program out the dash light??

    EGR removal is illegal.

Programming out/removal of a dash check light should be too - fix the fault, don't remove the light

Is it true that I can clear the light by leaving the battery off for 30 mins???

It won't matter, if the fault is still there when you turn it on again the light will light up again.

was planning on getting a new EGR valve and then needing the fault to clear. Would the bat off work for that?

No the Egr light can only be reset via Diagnostics, Why not try a EGR Valve cleaner such as Wynn's Diesel EGR 3 it removes most of the carbon build up that forms inside also don't use cheap supermarket diesel as this is the most common cause of clogged egr valves as it causes more soot.
I always recommend using a premium diesel such a Bp ultimate or Shell V power as it has the extra additives that dissolve all the deposits and prevents the deposits from forming.

Had this issue with my 1.9 tdi.
Wynns egr cleaner fixed it bud.
Take off the clip holding the rubber pipe going into egr. Remove pipe.
Have someone hold revs at 1500.
Spray for 1 second into the egr.
Do the full can on it. In 1 second sprays every so often.

Light went off on its own for me after that.

I also hear if the fault is fixed 7 restarts of the system will clear it.
