    Hi all

I have recently purchased an 04 Passat from a non VW dealer.

I have been supplied with 2 infared key fobs.

One of the fobs works perfectly, the other will do everything except unlock the car using the unlock button. The faulty key will unlock / lock the drivers door and start the car so it appears to be programmed ok,

I have looked at key fob threads on here and tried re-programming without success.

So would a low battery do this?

    Does anyone have any ideas?

    Many thanks.

Has the "good" key and the other key have the same letter code stamp.

Both of my keys have HAA. (Stamped on the key blade)

your other might be a "Valet" key if not stamped HAA

Yes.....the key is basically the key is two half's the ignition key part, then the remote locking part (button bit). so a new battery is a good starting point.

Just purchased a Golf tdi 2003 reg. [via auction]. Have only been supplied a single key with remote.

Problem was that the remote only opened the car when 1 foot from the door!

Changed the battery [discovered that there was some red powder like rust that must have been some liquid that had dried ]...cleaned the key with cotton bud and meths.. put in a new battery.. Problem persists.

Is this a 'programming' problem? Any suggestions appreciated.

Would I need to go to vw main dealer to have a duplicate key cut?

It looks as if the key has been corrupted with this "rust" you have found.

It might be that it needs to be reintroduced.

Yes VW dealer would sort out you problem at a price.

I would buy a good/new remote fob and swap the blade, then introduce this

    fob to your car.

If ebay purchase make sure its a HAA fob and seller has excellent feedback

and will refund if fob is faulty.

There is plenty of help in this forum on programming the fob.

    Best of luck.

Thanks for your prompt response Grimm.

Just a bit confused: Are you suggesting that I should go to a vw dealer or

do I buy a fob on ebay and have it 'cut' 'programmed' whatever by [say] a motor locksmith?

btw: I am no programmer.. or technical with cars.. what does 'reintroduced' mean?.. re-programmed?

    Thanks

What the HAA bit for I was under the impression thats just the type of blade

Common consensus is that the product code need to be the same, this can be found in the centre of the key when it is pulled apart!

I bought my replacement of ebay and another reseller cut a blank based on my existing key. I matched the remote in using the manual method and used Vag-com to match the immobiliser in so it will start the car.

If this sound too involved get hold of a auto locksmith who should be able to fix it for a fraction of dealer costs.
