We recently bought a mk4 1.9tdi it's a 53 plate. Past couple of week developed a squeak at the n/s/r so got it over the pit at work to find the anti roll bar snapped.

Tried our parts company they said vag only part and they say complete axle as can't get it separate.

    Surely this is wrong.

    welcome to vwaf.
yes, the mk4 golf, presuming its not a 4 motion, has a solid beam rear axle with integrated anti roll bar which is welded into the axle and cant be changed, so yes, its a complete axle thats needed, available either used or from vag, or there is a company set up in poland making them for about half the 500 notes vw sell them for. used ones are getting scarce now as they do tend to rot and are often the first thing to get rusty. i have seen them snap or wheels fold in.
