s3 gearbox problem

hi, im a newbie hear so hello one and all...

i have a problem with my 53 plate s3's gerbox, its the first gear thats the problem..

its done 80k, is due for its big service, inc. gearbox oil etc.

its really difficult to get into 1st gear, which usually means selecting 3rd by mistake, which is highly embarrasing when youve got some muppet in an old XR2 or the such like trying to race you off the lights, not too mention dangerous, stalling pulling away at junctions etc.

has anyone had similar probs as me as its doing my headin..

If you have VAG COM then you should rig it up and see if the car is giving any error codes. I would suggest changing the gearbox oil before looking at specific parts of the gearbox.

thanks for the advise but please excuse my ignorance what is VAG COM ?

how can they tell if its giving error codes do i have to take it to a garage and hook it up to a special machine so something..!!

Oh sorry, VAG COM is some computer software which you install on your PC/laptop, then connect the VAG COM lead (normally provided with the software) to the car's VAG COM port (most likely to be beneath the steering column). You can buy them from ross tech or you might find one on e-bay.

Oh, the VAG COM software gives you any error codes that the ECU is storing. It will also give you a short description of the error code, which gives you an idea of what it might be.
