After needing new pads were diagnosed as the issue that was causing a rattle on the wife's A5, we headed to our local Euro car parts dealer and bought a set of brembo pads. Got home, stripped the brakes and went to fit the new pads. Turns out they have given me the wrong set so they don't fit, will get them exchanged tomorrow so shouldn't be a problem.

My issue is that on the front of the caliper is the metal clip shown below. It had two fractures in it which caused it to break on removal. The second fracture isn't far from breaking and the drivers side has already snapped even though I haven't touched it yet.

My question is is this a safety issue or can I drive the car without? They don't appear to have a function. Secondly, does anyone have a part number and know where to order them from?

    Thanks

The second fracture that is not far off breaking is the straight line almost in the same position where it has snapped on the other side.

    Looks like an anti-rattle clip.

Probably the cause of the rattle then hahahaha

Guess it's safe to use without them?

normally if you order a pad fitting kit it will come with all the bits required, including these clips.

So fitting the new pads was straight forwards as expected, they went in with no problems. Today on a 200 mile round trip they felt good, bit well and stopped the car well, however there are two issues.

I think both are related to bedding in but not 100% sure.

Firstly the pads don't seem to be touching the whole disc, the pics below show how some is getting used and the rest isn't.

Second issue is, on intermittent occasions, the brakes make a strange sound that I can only describe as a wookie. Only goes on for a few seconds and happens at various speeds and I can't intentionally replicate it.

    Any ideas??

New pads on old discs will wear a bit oddly for a while.
    Not sure on the noise.

If you took your car to Audi they will recommend new discs. As said, as your old discs are not worn flat or evenly, the whole face of the pad won't touch the whole of the swept area until they have worn down to match the shape of the disc face.

I presume you have fitted new metal clips, these also 'hold' the caliper in position.
