    Hello Folks,

First post here, tried the search button, but nothing matching...

For the past couple of months I've been having a knocking sound coming from O/S Driver's side over speed bumps, potholes etc.. Initially thought ARB bushes were to blame, but the car was jacked up (by Intedependant garage) and nothng was found at all; no movement anywhere. Everything was tighter than a ducks' chuff. After leaving garage, there was no noise for around 200 miles and then the noise returned; same knocking, but very slightly worse. I'll try to summarise below :-

    1) Knocking noise over speed bumps / potholes etc..

    2) Into Independent garage, car jacked up, no visible cause; all components OK and tight. Car jacked down.

    2) No knocking sound, but in the safe confines of my own garage, pressing down several times; on top of front, driver'side headlight, a dull knocking sound would be heard. Doing similar on the Passenger side, there was no noise at all.

    3) Into Independent garage, car jacked up, no visible cause; all components OK and tight. Car jacked down.

    4) No knocking noise for around 150 - 300 miles. Knocking sound returned. (Repeat points 1, 2 & 3 above - several times).

    4) When WET / raining, there is NO knocking sound.

    5) When DRY, there IS a knocking sound. Booked car into VW garage. Again.

    6) Today (Wed 29th), identified as worn (Driver side) shock absorber and will be replaced accordingly with top mount & bearing.

OK Chaps - just divulging my (virgin) situation.

    Cheers fur noo,

    Mark.

If the question came first, some less expensive possibilities may have been suggested first, such as drop link arms and lower ball joint and bush,
assuming they are fitted to yours.

And what good would that have done, considering I explained the course of events above in my post and the faulty item was ultimately a shock absorber ?. I visited 2 x Independent garages and a VW dealer (who ultimately diagnosed the problem). Maybe I need to get someone to proof read my posts in future ?.

My experience is that many experts misdiagnose problems at times, and this can be at a large cost to their customers.
Knocking noises from suspensions is a good example as they are extremely difficult to pinpoint for anyone.
It is good that the garage was correct in their diagnosis.
I will keep it in mind not to reply to any of your future posts,as it seems that this one was not helpful.

I hope you're changing the pair of dampers?
