My electronic parking brake has been playing up, first not releasing till after a few minutes with lots of button pressing and lots of warning lights on the dash.

It has also not been showing as being on on the switch.

Diagnostics have show an error with the module J540, can't remember the code.

The part number on mine is 4F0 907 801 (4F0907801).

Can I just replace this with one off ebay? Will it need programming to work with my car? Would it be better to get a newer one?

Are they any know faults with the module that an engineer like me could fix? (Not looked inside the module yet)

My car is a early 2006 4.2 Avant Auto.

    Carl,

Look for later revision of the parking brake module, early versions like the one you have were a bit dumb and had software issues.

I believe the final software revision was D (SW:4F0910801D) something like this would be good to go for. AUDI 04-11 ELECTRIC HAND BRAKE CONTROL MODULE 4F0907801B 4F0910801D | eBay

It may need coding depending on engine size etc, here is the ross tech wiki information Audi A6 (4F) Parking Brake - Ross-Tech Wiki

It's not the switch, not according to the code.

Ok, makes sense to get a newer one with updated firmware.

The coding part has left me a little confused, as I understand it, some parts need to go back to Audi to allow a change of vehicle?

Or is the coding just something that needs VCDS to set the right settings?

Just find some local to you with VCDS, check out the VCDS section of the forum.

Also when you replace the module, do it with the brake off, just in case something goes wrong you will be able to drive the car to a garage etc.

Noneof the crimps on those pages are the right ones (the crimps are 6.35mm size crimps in a rectangle housing)
