The garage is saying that it's possibly due to the recent hot weather a couple of weeks or so ago, and are waiting for the next one which is forecast in a week or two. Meantime they're testing it out on the road followed by a van with a trailer just in case it does break down.

Not a techie, but they're using a computer sized gadget plugged into a socket beneath the steering wheel which can identify faults, problem being it's still not breaking down. The biggest danger being that it could breakdown at any time especially when crossing a busy dual carriageway, and why they can't do anything until it does it again nor understandingly let me drive it myself.

Are they getting any fault codes? When it breaks down, does it recover on its own after a cool down?

If there are no fault codes and it recovers after cooling down the first thing I would replace is the crank speed sender. You can get a clue to this in that when it losses power, look at the rev counter and see if the display is relevant to the inertia of the car turning the engine, if it drops to zero and the engine is still turning then that is a very good indicator of a faulty G28 crankshaft speed sender
