    Hi All,

Please help me decide wether to buy this car or not??

I am looking at a Audi A4 Avant 2.0 TDI, 2006, 88k, its a good price and I've wanted one for ages, then i get scared reading all the posts about the Balance Chaft module breaking. It has a BLB engine code and has done 88k miles, should I go for the car or should I walk away??

I've tried looking online and it's all quite confusing, so some advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

The blb problems are well deserved, although its not confined to that engine code,on balance I would say walk away, they have such a reputation that even if you have no problems when you come to replace it'll be hard to shift, try a later model with the spur gear drive, but even they have the stupid hex drive for the oil pump,so you pays your money and you take your choice, just my opinion for what its worth.

    Thanks Nevo,

Looks as though I will have to bin off the A4 and just go for something else! It's so dissapointing as you expect to pay good money for a good car like an audi and for it to last!

but its already lasted 10 years, what more do you expect ? you are in a place where 20 years ago you would be buying a 10 year old car to renovate and get a year or so out of it, now you can buy a 10 year old audi and still pay thousands for it. look at how many 10 year old fords you see compared to vag group cars. buy it but expect to have to do some work to it .

Thanks zollaf, I know what you are saying, its a very tough decision and everyone keeps telling me how well they drive and how good they are. At the end of the day i suppose it's just a gamble if the part breaks or not, like any second hand car, but the worrying thing is if that part does go it takes the whole engine with it!!

oh aye, i would buy it , then take the sump off and see whats what. if its worn sort it out, then enjoy the car for a long time. they do drive nicely, a lot nicer than anything else imho, my old 80 still drives better than almost any car i have to endure on a test drive, apart from newer audis and of course my s4.

No need to see what's what , all of them wear not one has been taken out without wear .

Even an oem 100mm common rail will show wear cause they still haven't addressed the keyway bore properly .

The only reconer is if it's been done with the modified remanufactured balancer shaft and longer 100mm key either as a wise preventative or failure .

And only 0.5mm of wear has to happen to lose oil pump drive.

The hex bar drive key isn't stupid it's the balancer shaft's keyway.

Thanks guys, The car I am buying is having the timing belt changed before I have it. Would it be wise for me ask him to sort the balance shaft module out now and pay for the upgrade? What parts would need to be replaced and how much do you think it'll cost?
