    I own a 2010 Passat cc GT 170.

Recently I got an error on my dash.
I bought the carista OBD2 thingy and used the pro version of the iPhone app to access the codes and their meanings.
There's one I really struggle with, maybe someon can help?
    Here it is:

    Headlight aiming:
00471 - Controller for EGD electronically regulated absorption (J250)

It's an issue with the passenger side xenon (they're bi xenon). Upon ignition they don't do their little dance anymore and the error is thrown straightaway. I think something's broken in there, but what?
Would it be a part I can buy myself and repair myself?
Any suggestions would be most welcome! Thanks

The J250 is the control unit for the variable suspension dampers, shock absorbers in the common tongue, and before spending £376.78 on the part, 3C0 907 376 A Z0S, it could do with some detailed analysis of the car using the VAG diagnostic system Guided Fault Finding.

    Thanks for your reply.
I'm confused because although I understand your answer, and the J250 may well be for the shock absorbers, the fault actually pertains to the headlights. In particular the aiming assistance of the headlight (PAS).
Maybe there's a couple of vaults mixed up together. One for the shock absorbers and another. The one I want addressing is the other, i.e. the one to do with the headlight aiming.
I have cleared the faults via the OBD2 software, turned off the ignition, turned it on again and I can hear in the housing of the passenger side headlight some mechanical noise going for a while, like it's trying to do its little dance (as it used to) but it can't, then the fault comes up on the dash.

It needs deeper investigation into what the headlight controller is detecting as being faulty, I presume your reader is picking up that code at address 55 which is the headlight range control unit J745 but unlike VAS PC or VCDS, it does not tell you. The code stored in the J745 just says there is a problem with the J250 suspension controller but doesn’t specify what, the nature of the fault is not shown, such as is the J250 faulty or is there a fault between it and the headlight controller? The cars three level senders (front and rear left) are connected to the J250 and this data is then sent to the J533 Data bus diagnostic interface via the powertrain CAN bus and then to the J745 headlight controller, this data is a legal necessity for cars with gas discharge headlights to ensure the beam stays level as the cars ride height varies. The rear left level sender is also connected directly to the headlight controller. The car needs a code read that interrogates the J250 and both headlights

I am flabbergasted by your level of knowledge on these things. And obviously this flew well high above my head. What I do understand is that my reader, as you say yourself, only gives me limited information and it cannot tell me what is really going on. I guess if I really want to sort this out I'll have to go to VW and bite their hefty £££ bullet for a proper diagnostic and sort the thingy out. You don't happen to live in north west England by any chance?
