I would like to change the cambelt(s) and tensioners on my AFB 1999 A6. I foolishly bought one of those dvd manuals for my last 5 cyl 2.5 tdi off ebay only to find that it was targetted at the U.S. market and there was little or no info on diesels. I have changed cambelts on VW diesels before but not on an engine with 4 camshafts and realise the importance of aligning all timing marks. Could anyone suggest where I could get a genuine and helpful manual?

Its not a easy to do job without the right tools or experience. Get it wrong and you looking at a very expensive engine repair ! If you get the right tools and you feel confident, its doable, however, you will need vag-com or equivalent to set te pump right...Best its to let the job to experts ! I would not skimp on this, replace all belts, relay rollers and dampers (!) while you there, also, the water pump and thermostat....See my other posts for full cambelt offers for £370 all in ! Regards, Chris- 077 899 12128.

Chris, What parameter need setting using vag-com after the cam belt change ? I heard this somewhere but couldn't find any details on it. Not in Autodata anyhow. I did the belt on my AKE - seems to run like it did before. Cheers. Dave

    Hello,

A very long time ago. In the end I took the car to a Volkswagen garage to change the belt, because I thought it would be done correctly, ERROR! The fitter stripped the thread in the aluminium casting which supports the tensioner. He fitted a helicoil but only a short one which only went just inside the stripped thread hole. I had driven the car for maybe 1000km, the helicoil pulled out, and the head and one camshaft were wrecked. 4700Euros repair, which in the end Volkswagen paid. If the fitter had just fitted a helicoil the full depth of the hole instead of the last half inch, the breakdown would not have happened. I changed my car to a 2006 A6 Allroad 3.0 tdi in 2011. It would be great if someone could give me elsawin instructions for adjusting the electric tailgate, it is driving me nuts.

Sign up to erWin, I advise first time users to buy a €30 day rate so you can take your time downloading and saving as a pdf all the cars data and you will need quite a lot of disc space.
