    The oil dipstick indicated that it needs some oil, so I thought I would find out from fellow Golf owners about the best recommended engine oil for a VW Golf MK6 1.6 TDi Bluemotion (62 Reg)

    Any other tips are also welcome.

    Thanks in advance

    Welcome to the forum.

    When I did my yearly service last year, I always use parts from my dealer. I asked for 5ltr of 5W/30 which I've always used before. They said there is a new spec they now recommend 5W/40.

    5W/40 Quantum Platinum 5 litre - ZGB 115 QLB 00 521 - £39
    2010 Golf GTD (170) CBBB, 5 Door, Shadow Blue (P6/D5Q), Flat Tyre Indicator, Basic Protection Pack + VCDS.

    5W40 Quantum Platinum 505.01 is a medium quality oil .

    High quality oil is 5W30 Quantum-Longlife III 507.00

    The oils have been labled by a German labritory commissioned by VW themselves .

    Further two other separate sources comfirm 507.00 superiority .

    Please stop this nonsense about 5W40 505.01 being better .

    You're paying a bit too much at £39! My local dealer sells it out at £27.16 inc VAT for the 5W30 LL3.

    In a way the 5W40 505.01 is obsolete really as the 5W30 Quantum-Longlife III does it all and is the most common diet of the VAG stable .

    Those dealers and independents in the know just use the one oil that does both fixed and variable servicing , not that I agree with LongLife servicing intervals .

    A dealer is there purely as a business to sell and they can be misguiding at times , appart from selling you the lesser quality oil at a high price they sold one poor guy despite a registration being supplied who had a PD engine was supplied some non PD Quantum Synta 10W40 semi synthetic after 5+ years of doing this it ended up with a missfire and a new camshaft required due to lobe wear , unfortunately he had disposed of his receipts .

    This "new" 5W40 Quantum Platinum has been around for at least 7 years and if there is to be any new oil it will be 508.00 which will probably be a 0W20 .

    Thanks for the replies, all. There aren't any VW dealers close to where I live. But there is a Halfords store. Would the Halfords own brand be alright? When I supplied my Reg plate online, it gave me these options.

    1. The Halfords own branded oil
    =======================
    Halfords 5W30 Fully Synthetic VW/Au...

    This one states that it conforms to VW 507 00 requirements.

    2. The Mobil 1 ESP 5w/30
    ====================

    The Mobil one is a lot more expensive. Is it worth the extra money?

    I'll add here that my Golf has a DPF, and I believe these oils are suited to cars with DPF.
