I am the proud owner of a 1997 1.8 non turbo A4 that has totted up some 117 000 miles. Most things seem fine with the car apart from the obligatory squeaky suspension (I have bought new front springs and I hope that these will cure the squeaks) and a dubious temperature sender switch which keeps breaking and thus my dashboard temp gauge doesn't work....but that's another story.

Anyway my main question is this, what can I do to my A4 to improve power and performance without blowing a hole in the side of this ageing engine or more importantly my wallet?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions

Somebody maybe able to correct me, but there isn't much, unless you spend hundreds on cams, head work, exhaust etc etc and even then you won't see big gains. Unfortunately its only the turbo'd models that can easily see more power.

Without spending crazy money on a 2 litre conversion the ADR engine is completely un-tuneable, sell it and but a more powerful version, preferably a 130 PD TDI and put a tuning box on it.

Well thanks for those honest answers. I reckon it fairly well clears that question up for me. Cheers.

As the others say, there is very little you can do with it in terms of engine. However, it is far easier to make it look even better. You can buy genuine Audi parts on e-bay and make it look even cooler. That's what i've done!

Forgot to mention, mine is an A6!!! But they still made genuine tuning parts like chrome mirrors, spoilers etc for the A4's. I have also added interior stuff like a CD changer, armrest etc. I am guessing the pics of mine are no longer of any use to you then!
