Golf tdi 1.6 aircon compressor fault

Have just had the egr replaced on my mk6 golf and whilst it was in I asked them to look at the aircon.
They informed me the compressor is faulty, apparently the clutch or part of it is broken. something to do with the bolt shearing.
Anyone else had this as he's saying it's really common ?
Also is there an alternative to replacing the whole compressor?

Extremely common Golf 5/6 problem, they don't have a clutch, they are constant direct drive with frequency modulated delivery. When we take off the lower engine cover, we often find the shear plate drops onto the floor. You can get a new Delphi unit from ECO for £300.
