    Just an update:

I'd resigned myself to living with folding out the mirror manually each time as the repair is so expensive for what is a luxury function.
But yesterday I'd driven the car after folding the drivers mirror manually. Parked up and locked the car, and the passenger mirror folded as usual.
When I got back in the car I noticed that the drivers mirror had folded too.
Started the car and both mirrors folded out as they should!

But now it's back to the drivers mirror not folding.
So it seems it's some connection issue rather a motor failure.

Anyone have any diagrams on what's behind the mirror plate and how to remove the mirror to get access?

I assume I'd see the motor and connector behind the mirror plate if I could take it out?
Hopefully it may just be a corroded / loose wiring connection to the motor.

Did you ever solve this? I am having exactly the same issue (even when it came back to life).. VERY annoying!

Unfortunately it was never resolved. I no longer have the car.
My current car, a Seat Alhambra annoyingly developed the exact same issue.
I had it completely checked out by an independent VW specialist. He traced and checked all the wiring and found no fault with that. He thought he’d tracked the issue to the door control module unit, as when he bypassed the control unit the mirror would move. So he replaced the module, but After replacing it he found the problem was still there. Occasionally it would work but more often it would not. The problem is it would often get stuck folded in, which meant I’d have to fold it out manually, which left the mirror floppy and not locked in position.
He reckoned it must be some intermittent fault internally with the mirror motor.
On the Alhambra the mirror also has a puddle light, which also does not operate when the mirror doesn’t fold, so it’s all related somehow. I just don’t know the cause!
The mechanic was very good and let me keep the new door module free of charge. His only recommendation was to buy a whole new mirror unit, but the cost is astronomical at £450-500. Even second hand they seem to a few hundred pounds. So just not worth it for me.
l’ve just learnt to never fold the mirrors!

Oh my that sounds like a nightmare! I was pondering on a new unit itself. Audi quoted me about £200 which I might consider although i am pondering on moving from VAG cars now as too many annoying and expensive issues arising.

Will let you know how I get on

mine has started doing this. mirror setting for driver side doesnt go back to its last known position. I have to use the stalk to fold mirrors and then unfold which usually works.

I have extended warranty so taking it into Audi to investigate

    Did yours get sorted?

I bought my A6 Allroad last year, used Audi approved, it is the 2015 model, i've had mine stick 1-2 times but usually switching it closed then reopening fixes it.

Alas, it was in for a service as part of my service plan yesterday, The N/S mirror doesnt want to play ball at all now, tried to help it as I sometimes had to with my old 2006 A6 but this ones isnt having it.
I got 2 years Audi warranty on mine so I'm in the same boat as you it seems.

Annoyingly, this side had an indicator issue when I bought it, half the led's were working, they eventually sorted it out, then recently I've noticed the mirror itself vibrates ever so slightly whilst driving and its annoying, I'm led to believe this could be glue coming undone, now this. Hopefully they drop the bloody thing entirely and break it having to replace it entirely!!, although there cant be much left to go wrong with it ^^
