My bonnet requires two people to open. I took it off and subnerge it in thinner to remove dirt rust and else. It appears that there is hard plastic piece broken in there and I suspect it is important for the mecanisn. Can some one confirm? The cable is brand new.

    Thanks!

These latches are prone to corrosion and sticking. Once they start causing problems I recommend replacement. They are not too expensive. If your cable is ok, you should have no problems once the latch is replaced. See Stuart Dalby - 2005 Volkswagen Golf Mk 5 - New Bonnet Latch

    Hope that helps,

Thanks! I ended up buying a brand new aftermarket one that came from poland for £15. The plastic bracket the latches into the catch is not the greatest fit but works well and problem solved. Indeed my old oem one had a hardplastic guide broken and missing parts making it impossible to operate
