    Hi
Hoping somebody can help to solve my cars starting problems. I am having extreme difficulty starting the car when it is cold in the morning. But for the remainder of the day it will restart straight away once it has been started in the morning.

The glow plug light goes out almost immediately I turn the ignition key on. I had the RAC out to look at it but he was unable to sort it out and resorted to putting cold start down the air filter. The RAC man did however tell me that there was no power going to the glow plugs and that the glow plug relay was the most likely cause of this but as he could not find the relay he could not be certain.

I have since located the glow plug relay (no 130) which involved removing the lower part of the dash and have since replaced the relay with a new one from VW.

Still no joy. The car starts after several turns of the key and pumps of the accelerator pedal and results in a cloud of grey exhaust fumes - I am starting to worry in case I get a visit from friends of the earth or worse still Al Gore and my young daughter is moaning I am destroying the environment and causing global warning.

Really don't know what to do next. I have the car booked in for end of next week with an auto electrician but would really like to sort it out before then if possible. Thanking you in anticipation

Get it plugged into vag-com - sounds like possibly a temperature sensor fault. (Hence no power going to relay so no power coming from relay)

    Hi
Thank you for that bit of information, do you know where I can locate the temperature sensors, and would removing the sensor rectify the problem till I got it replaced. Once again thanks

Yea just check the engine code again ..my car is a 2001 TDI 90 hp engine code ALH. Anyways sounds like ur static timing is just a little out ..u need to have it checked on vag com. The fuel pump is able to adjust its timing slightly when its running but the static timing is crucial for cold starts. if u try www.tdiclub.com and search for cold starting problem ..its a fantastic forum.
    Good Luck,
