    Hi Folks,

    I have a 1.6 tdi 2012 passat estate.

Project this weekend is to do the rear discs etc, was watching the Ross Tech video and it says to attach a charger to maintain the batt voltage which is required by one of the epb modules or else it will create problems.

What kind of charger can I use, I understand my car uses a AGM (Absorbed glass mat) battery and this may need special charging!?

What a pita this is my B7 is a great car but the EPB is a joke I hate it, I just want to do the rear discs and pads and have to go through all this faff before even taking anything appart!

Any help appreciated with charging or any tips on changing the rear brakes!

lol, you need to keep a steady voltage when you unwind the calipers. if the battery is good then you probably won't need a charger, but to be on the safe side because the ignition is on and you have a computer connected, just connect any charger, even a really old fashioned one. you are not charging the battery as such so it doesn't matter. its just if the voltage gets too low it causes grief. i don't know what grief as i have never done it without a charger connected.

you could buy an autel vag505 and rewind the brakes the proper way, around £80- 110 .

its also a code reader and will reset your service light etc

I swear by it, others swear by vcds ( in which I wish I could buy ) but if your on a budget, the autel is hard to beat

Sorry I should have said I'm using a vcds, I don't know how you could do the job otherwise!

I understand with certain newer vags you need to maintain the voltage as described above, I don't think (but may be wrong) that any old charger will do because Agm batteries charge quicker than normal batteries so even a short time could do damage!

Some people leave the engine running which I don't fancy work in and around the exhaust fumes!

I will not be beaten by this total nonsense!

Will repost what happens, any other feedback appreciated!

Knowing my luck one of the disc retaining screws will have seized!

What mileage are we talking about before they need changing.

My old Audi A4 1998 at 145k, only had two sets in that time. Though I replaced them I suspect had I had them changed by a garage it would have been cost effective.

Do we know how much a garage would charge to change them on an EPB vehicle.

Vw is £290 and budget Indy with crap parts is £160 both for pads and discs.

Trw is oem parts, I'm using pagid which I've found good in the past. £74 for parts from ecp.

As you already own VCDS you have removed much of the cost so its just your time to do the work. I suspect you are more than adequately suited for the job and may well enjoy it at the end of the day...lets hope it does not take that long.

For me it appears the Vag505 will also release the mechanism but having checked there are dangers involved in even buying a genuine one to start with. Then a good AGM charger must be sourced which yet again one would have to tread very carefully with when sourcing.

I have two local VW specialist so may get a few prices from them to compare.

in the autel vag505 , its a simple job. Its just rewind and that's it

However getting the 2 bolts off on each side is a nightmare, on a 2008 model anyway. The bolts are really, really tight and hard to get into, with almost 20% turn available.

After the epb rewinds, then you have to screw in piston.

That £290 alone is sounding good.

I emailed my local VW specialist (not dealer) with all the details of my Passat to provide a quote and they emailed back...please phone to discuss. I shall not be using them for anything.

In short when the time comes I will have my local VW dealer do it.
