'04 1.6 FSI Golf MkV - earlier this week the yellow "engine" warning light came on whilst on the motorway. After a "1 hour diagnostic exploration" (£85+vat) the dealer told me it needed a new NOx sensor (£256+vat) + fitting (1¼Hrs@£85ph+vat) grand total £525.

The car has only done 24,500 miles, should it need a new one of these after this time? Is there a "fit for purpose" disagreement brewing here?

On idle, the exhaust sounds a bit rattly - could it just be a faulty /perforated exhaust rather than a faulty NOx sensor?

Aside: can any back-street garage maintain cars such as this these days or does it need tech gear that only the VW dealers have?

    Cheers, Alan.
