    Hello,

my car starts fine, but I get a waft of fumes around the front end of the car, although not seemingly at the back near the pipes. The engine is cold at this point. When stopped at lights or a junction, I can smell the fumes again if a door or window is opened. The smell is exhaust related but not thick and heavy like if you behind an old bus. Someone asked if it was a sweet smell, indicating coolant, but I honestly cannot tell.

The car does smoke from time to time when stationary in traffic and at operating temperature, but it's infrequent. It's an ASB engine with it's original AB injectors. I suspect that I'm getting close to needing new ones, but I would like to explore all possibilities, particularly the cheaper ones. It still performs well and returned 46 mpg on a round trip to Stansted last night.

What other things should I be checking, and what could I do myself (diagnosis and/or repairs), before leaving it in the hands of an expert? I'm pretty able and have a good supply of tools (although not a VCDS cable.....yet).

It's an April 2006 car and I've owned it from new, so I know the history.

    Cheers.

If there is that smell under the hood when its cold end a ticking sound while cold engine that is a injector leak .you need to replace a injector coppre ring.you will see a black carbon mass that leaks from the engine head at the cilinder that is leaking.

If you have raising oil level over the max that is the case.injectors are leaking fuel into the oil pan thry the block.

    Thanks @vodoniksteva

I just changed the oil and filter last week, so I will keep a close eye on the level. I am also thinking that I need to change the injectors because it is such a common problem with the old AB injectors. Is it ok to buy the 'remanufactured' injectors which I see on eBay?
