Hello. I have a Passat 1.8T on a W plate. There are 2 niggles I have and I wonder if they are related and if anyone had experienced the same.

Firstly, on tottering along in 2nd gear at low revs, say 1000-1300 rpm, you get quite a bad kangarooing which goes away as the revs rise. Secondly, there is an annoying fault where at high engine speeds the revs stay high after coming off the throttle and putting the clutch in (Almost like you have stayed on the throttle too long when changing gear.)

Would be interested if anyone has experienced the same,...

    Cheers

It could be one of two things ,
1 : it could be the throttle body needs cleaning and then a throttle body adjustment afterwards.

2 : A common failure is the brake switch , this can cause those problems , try changing this out ,Calum.

I have a VAG-COM cable on its way. Hopefully I can get it all to work and get those codes (I do have a back up plan; my mate has one!)

    Ok.

Well I have scanned for fault codes and found none.
All the basic readings look within limits, except the advance which is 21 deg at idle with or without the A/C on. I dont know why it would be so high so I need to do more digging; it could be a symptom of another problem. Any ideas?

Now remove the throttle body and clean it like Calum suggested and then reset it with the engine off but the ignition on in Basic Adjustment mode 04, group 098.

i HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AS YOURSELF FOR SOME TIME, Firstly my cousin did a diagnostic, this told him it was the Lambda Sensor, so he changed that. All seemed well for a short time then it started again he did another reset on the faults, this seemed to help. Then on one occasion it was really bad, this turned out to be a split pipe which has now been changed, the fault is still there but seems a bit better now. Today i had the sparks out which were all covered in sooty black carbon, Running a bit rich on the airfuel mixture i think, do you know how to adjust this?

The fuelling is dictated by the ECU and is not adjustable; you may have a faulty Air Mass Meter.
