    Hi All,

Been looking for some A6's and ive come across a nice 2006 2.4 petrol Quattro S Line, i was just wondering if anyone could shed some light on this particular engine to see if its prone to issues or a solid V6.

    Many Thanks

Hi Sweet and welcome to the forum.

I've been on this forum for over 4yrs and only recall 2 posts from 2.4 owners.

Most of the problems relate to the diesel models with injector/DPF/EGR and carbon deposits, most of which won't apply to you.

What's it's mileage and do you have the opportunity to scan it with VCDS (Vagcom) before purchase, this will identify any issues.

The only things that would apply are:

    1) The rear wiper if an avant/estate
    2) The suspension arms which seem to be made of chocolate.

Cam belts are difficult to get done accurately as no one has the tools so it's Tipex and pray all the way.

Those engines, even in the third generation version, just seem to leak oil from everywhere.

    Hi mark,

Thank you very much for your reply! Since writing that post ive been edged by some friends to go for the 3.0TDI Quattro, they have been written as bulletproof engines however you have listed some valid points with the DPF, EGR and so forth. If you do have an opinion on the 3.0tdi it would be much appreciated, my budget is 4k ish so ive found some around 05/07 averaging 140k miles, at the moment i have my eye on a lemans 2006 with 140k. And i dont have a VCDS, but depending on the price that would definitely be a wise decission when choosing the car, im waiting for money to clear so it will be within 23 days or so which is exciting! Ive also got my eye on some black chrome headlights:

The 3 litre TDI is not bullet proof

These are typical faults I see

    1) Cam chain wear is becoming a major problem and doing it before it jumps costs more than many cars are worth and if it does jump and **** a valve or 6, that's the end for that car.
    2) DMF's fail and rattle on manuals,
    3) Turbos are prone to actuator failure and this is an expensive off the car job plus turbo rebuild.
    4) Then there is the manifold flap issue which is over a grand for both sides,
    5) high pressure fuel pump failure
    6) EGR valves,
    7) Worn injectors (£2.5K)
    8) Failed glow plugs that snap being removed

Im worried now... i decided the check the injectors (given how expensive it is) and there are many issues, some start with a thread title of white smoke which then turned out to be injectors as well. On one thread someone said specifically 05/06 or 06/07 seemed to suffer with the injectors issue which are the years im looking at.. the later versions had the newer revisions of injectors but to go to 2008 onwards id need at least another £1500 or so on top. So of your experience do any engines in particular seem to do well?

I had a Toerag in on Monday that was built AFTER the new injectors came in and they are still worn out but then again it had done 125K miles. The state of the injectors can be checked in measuring blocks.

The problem is, the car costs my max budget (4K) injectors are potentially 50-55% of the cars value with fitting, also take into account im buying one second hand with 140k average miles am i quite literally taking a risk.. thats whats going through my mind... because of what you've said i decided to have another look, i could buy an A4 2.0 diesel S-Line limited edition for around 2.5k. I do need to research again as i could find these 2.0 TDI suffer similar issues but i am thinking thanks to your information that maybe the A6 3.0 isnt the way to go for me.. so thanks in advance it could very well have saved me a lot of stress!

Oil pump drive failure is the killer on those, some are more prone than others, early -terrible, mid - awful, late-still a problem....

One important point and I keep hammering on about this, you can't quantify the cost of repairs against what the vehicle is worth, it simply won't work and will lead to tears. It isn't a £4k car, it is a £50K car that is costing you £4K and it is an old high mileage £50K car, cars don't get cheaper to run as they age....
