    (2006 3.0tdi quattro manual 140k miles production number 319**)

Hello to everyone out there with a similar vehicle!

Gotta love this forum - I've managed to glean a fair bit from all your posts so first things first: thank YOU!

But I write with a few woes, and would really appreciate your input.

    1. Last Saturday my crank pulley completely came off when pulling out of a tight spot. I was under a bit of time pressure and not far from home. Decided to try and make it home, knowing full well the aux belt had come off but didn't know it drove the water pump Anyway a few miles down the road and I had to pull over. Not sure if it was super hot and seizing or whether it was in a limp mode, but I was losing power had to get it recovered home. Tried starting it a few hours later and it ran OK so I'm hoping I didn't do any permanent damage.

I see this is a know issue for the 2.7/3.0 etc. My question is what should I replace along with the Pulley? I have on my list so far: Pulley, pulley shim, belt, tensioner, idlers (I think there are three??), front crankshaft oil seal (how easy is this to replace??). Is there anything else worth doing while I'm there? Water pump? Any electrical items e.g. switches etc?

    2. Injectors. So in heavy traffic, and for no apparent reason, it starts to let out massive amounts of (I think) white smoke. Nothing else appears to be amiss when this happens. Is this injectors? Do most of you opt to replace, or refurb?

    3. I had heard before I bought the car that a little chain rattle for a second or two on start up is normal. But I have since found that it may not be, and it may be due to a specific bank's chain tensioner/rail wearing poorly. Now, I can't tell whether the rattle I heard before the crank pulley failure was cam chain rattle on start up, or the start of the crank pulley starting to go. In any case, is this something that is likely to worsen if it is due to the chain, and is an engine out job? In which case is it sensible to change all of the 4 chains and associated tensioners/rails?

    4. Last but not least, an ever increasing oil level! This is almost the most worrying one for me. When I bought it the oil level was a bit high, so when I got around to doing an oil change, I noticed there was around 2 litres of oil over the quoted! Anyway, I put the correct amount in with the new stuff, but I have noticed ever since then that the oil level has been increasing. What is going on?!? Coolant level doesn't drop, so where is it coming from? I had heard on the PD engine that diesel can get in to the oil sump past the injectors, but have been told the injected architecture on the 3.0tdi is impossible for that to happen. So whey is it climbing???

I'm tempted to get the crank pulley job sorted, and then see if I still have a rattle on start up before thinking about pulling the engine...

Any thoughts on a course of action welcome!

The oil level increasing is most likely due to an injector leaking diesel which seeps into the sump increasing the oil level.

You need to do the pulley conversion with pulley 059 105 251 BN and damper 059 145 201 F with belt 059 903 137 P which is £408 in parts. You will need a new set of injectors by the sound of it, usually it would be a Bosch 0 986 435 358.

I always wondered why the timing belt kits had the option of crank pulley included.
Sounds like your injectors have the usual problem with smoke at prolonged idle and the less common one of a body leak into the timing chamber and ultimately the sump.

Google "6-Service Manual 6-cylinder TDI engine" for PDF instructions.

Have a look at the part number of your injectors, (on the black plastic injector heads) especially the last two digits and post them here.

I used 8 hole nozzle 1800 MAX BAR : BOSCH 0445116022 AUDI 059130277BE in my ASB engine with excellent results and they are much cheaper than the older injectors which are 1600 MAX BAR with 7 holes.

Man that was a real headache trying to read the text on the injectors! I have:

059 130 277 AH and then 1281 I think (too close to see clearly).
060705 So presumably never been changed...
SB5DDHF B8E or BVX or ECX... They were all different. Serial number?
    Finally 0445115 052.

Did you have to do any mods to run the different injectors with 8 holes? Definitely up for cheaper, but only if they work properly with the ECU.

With your car I would be fitting Bosch 0 986 435 358 injectors.

No modifications, just the usual IQA setup with VCDS.
I can't tell the difference. The fuel system only reaches the 1600/1800 BAR at maximum output - most of the time it is 300-500BAR anyway.
I only bought BE suffix as 3-4 others in Germany said they used them and they were fine and the were about a grand cheaper for the set 2.5 years ago.
If that's no longer the case, or you don't mind the price, then get the original spec. ones.
AH could be original on a late 2006 .....

OK all done, thanks guys. Did all the idlers, tensioner, Main damper pulley and water pump. Next on the list are injectors.
However, I still would like more experience on how to gauge whether I have 'bad' chain rattle, or whether it's 'normal' chain rattle if possible.

Perhaps hydraulic tappet noise? something to rule out before go downing "Chain" route.
