    thanks for your reply,

    its a 2005, B5.5 with the 1.9 AVB engine,

I'm from Ireland and the car was imported from the UK but I don't know original plate number,

is that a permanent fix or a way test it to see if it stops........... just pull off the hose and blank it?

    EDIT:

I rang the garage just now and they say that the sound stopped after they the car warmed up and they couldn't get it to do it again after they replaced the small hose.
Although the car is under warranty they are reluctant to replace the EGR in case it doesn't solve the problem, they say the diaphragm is okay, no problems there but I've
told them to take it back and inspect the N18 solenoid valve thingy that Rob69 mentioned in an earlier post! that won't happen until next week though...

It's permanent and should stop noise but because its 2005 it will give eml that can take up to 2 days to appear so a quick disable test is ok .

You can blank it aswell with disable .

But remap is vital to remove the egr eml software .

The N18 valve pulses to allow varying degrees of vacuum to open the EGR to whatever position is required by the ECU. I think your N18 is playing up when completely cold and it is applying vacuum, opening the EGR then dumping the vacuum allowing the EGR to slam shut giving the popping sound. When the N18 gets a bit warmth in it or has cycled a bit, it frees up and works ok.
Just a theory - let us know how you get on.

A word of caution re. plugging the line - if you take the car back with the CEL on and tell them you've tried this and that they might use that to wriggle out of replacing anything under warranty, saying you've messed around and broken something. N18 valves start at 40 odd quid and I got an OEM EGR for my Passat for around 100 ( I seem to remember)

when I get home tonight I'll take a video of the noise... for the laugh!

its more of a suction noise than popping and as my wife says.. it sound like a bloody duck!!

    are N18 valves available spurious?

Right so.. I took off the hose, blanked it with a screwdriver and no noise. As soon as I plugged it back on it started again.

When the car is warm I can only get it to make the noise by tapping the accelerator , and I mean bearly tapping it with my hand!

I took a video and I'll try upload it later...

I'll look up a company to do it. Regarding the disabling of the ERG is it just as simple as unplugging the hose and blanking it or do you have to blank the metal pipe too...
