hi folks I am new on here I was just wondering would the alternator from the Passat b6 fit
on the Passat b5 I am just wondering cos my alternator has died and I could use the extra ampage of the b6
which is 160 amp rather than the 120 amp of the b5 . thanks in advance for any replies
    have a good 1

i don't think it would fit. curious as to why you need the extra amps though, do you run a massive winch or something ?

ah, fair play. so you have an afn in there ? on a boat where you are not governed by the engine bay then i would say it could be made to fit. you may have to adopt the front pulley. it would help to know whats already there though as the b5 had a few different applications, but i could see an afn accepting a later one as they are essentially the same fitments. coudl you post a pic of your current setup ? i lived on a boat myself for 5 years.

I have no idea what an afn is but the engine is still in the car (I have only had it 10 days)
I have a removable battery box which I Velcro to the floor and extend the battery leads
Through grommets in the bulkhead but it is fused on the battery clamp normally 100amp
Then into a split charge relay so the start battery gets charged first I use 45mm2 cables for the extra battery
I have been using the same system on single alternator boat setups for at least 10 years now
And my cars for at least 8 years with no probs

right, got you, so the engine is in the car not the boat. post a pic up of the engine bay then and we can try to compare to a b6..

If you could find a way to fit battery that is being charged externally,it would be a lot safer.
The gases produced while charging are reported to be very explosive,it only takes a small spark/arc.

yes they are its all most pure hydrogen that's produced but if the battery is in reasonable condition at 14.5 volts it shouldn't be gassing anyway
and if it does you very quickly smell it . if its gassing the fluid level is far to low or the plates are fusing and the battery needs binning
sorry I should have said I have been living on batteries on the boat for 11 years now and 18 years in a caravan before that this isn't something
new I have just decided to do I have perfected it over many years I had a crash 2 years ago with 2 batteries on charge and the boxes didn't move
I do have a reasonable idea what I am doing but thanks for your concern
    have a good 1 riki

yes it is deep cycle leisure batteries that I charge in the car
I all so have an lpg kipor suitcase genny but I work part time as a service engineer
for kipor so do long runs in the car so why not charge my batteries while
driving and save fuel from having to use some other form of charging
I all so have solar panels on my roof but don't get much charge from them at this time
of year even with the 120 amp alternator that's in the car it recharges the start
battery in 15-20 min so why waste the power that is being produced
anyway I can spend 6-7 hours driving for a 1 hour job that means I can fully
charge 3 110ah batteries with out using any extra fuel
I should also say my batteries are all sealed AGM so you could leave them upside-down
    With no fear of leakage
