    Hi Guys & Girls,

I've been doing some looking round on the web to upgrade my MMI. I have an MY2012 A6 Quattro with the 3GP MMI.

I have never had it updated and when I looked into how much it would cost and IF the dealer would do this for me, it was
becoming apparent that it would cost upwards of 500 GBP and you would have to convince the dealer to perform the update
for whatever reason/issue you had with the current one.

I then stepped up my searching and found a few guides outlining various parts to the DIY upgrade process.

To cut a long story short, I started on v517 so I had to follow the upgrade path of:

    1) 8R0 906 961 BM - v518
    2) 8R0 906 961 BT - v612
    3) 8R0 906 961 CD - v614
    4) 8R0 906 961 DG - v770

I'm currently on v770 and have performed some tweaks in VCDS.

The issue I had, was when I upgraded to v518, there was an update that applied to the Bose DSP which messed up the fader
    / balance settings.

I thought that going through the other upgrade versions may resolve the issue, but it did not. I do not believe that the
Bose amp (DSP) is in component protection mode as my sound does not cut out intermittently.

I did some searching on the web in regards to this issue, and found another person with the same issue, but he was from
the USA and his car was under warranty so the dealer applied TSB 2030465/7 update to resolved his issue. The worksheet states that the dealer upgraded the zug version from 715 to 814 and then performed an SVM update.

I'm unsure what the SVM update could be?

Link to the TSB article: http://www.revbase.com/BBBMotor/TSb/...dPdf?id=190128

Another search advised that the issue can be resolved using 'vcan-tool' not vag-com? But I do not have a 'vcan-tool' only vag-com VCDS.

I hooked up the car to VCDS and got the following fault code:

Address 47: Sound System Labels: None
    Control Module Part Number: 4G0 035 223 C HW: 4G0 035 223 A
    Component and/or Version: BOSE-G3-C7 H07 0160
    Software Coding: 010000
    Work Shop Code: WSC 02391 785 00200
    VCID: 1D36415B04A269C9659-8048

    1 Faults Found:

    03389 - Data Set Implausible
    000 - -
    Freeze Frame:
    Fault Status: 01100000
    Fault Priority: 2
    Fault Frequency: 1
    Reset counter: 82
    Time Indication: 0

Does anyone here know how I can resolve this issue with vag-com (if possible) or know of any other methods other than a costly trip to the local Audi dealer?

The only other thing I can think of is get the 8R0906961DR v814 update and apply this, but I'd still need to performed an SVM update according to the TSB article which I don't have a clue on how or what to do

Thank you for taking the time to read this and may thanks in advance for any suggestions or fixes.

Feel your pain, (did updates on C6 A6 and that was enought stress, paid a franchise garage £26 for the v5xx to 770 update and 1 hr labour for my C7 A7).
    I can't help but .....

    SVM = Software version management.
Basically it's saying the value in the bose adaptation unit is incorrect... it needs to be read out (decoded) and replaced with the correct value.

This is why I stopped doing my own updates to firmware and now only play in the VCDS...

Sorry once again, very well written Opening post...

Thank you for the reply, just a few questions then..

What did you say to the garage in order to get the issue fixed?

also when you had the garage perform the upgrade, was the car still under warranty?

    Thanks in advance

sorry I may of not made my post clear...
I did not have your issue with the SVM code being incorrect.

I had version 518 MMI and car was out of warranty and they did all the updates.
I did approach AUDI dealer but they were more than expensive and unhelpful.

    Screenshot_2016-02-25-22-01-49_resized.jpg

I knew there was alot of updates to goto 770 (which I needed for the car to run on it's own SIM for DATA & my mobile phone to connect via bluetooth).
I'd read up about the updates to MMI firmware and an issue with BOSE equipped cars and decided to got my local Audi registered garage (not a dealership).

Asked them if they could update my MMI to the latest (which was 770 at the time, my car is MY2012) and they said £26 for software & 1 hour labour (£60).
I said sounds good, I had them do the update when they received the files from AUDI. (I used German Auto Care Ltd in Leeds germanautocare.co.uk ).

I'd suggest goto to a specialist garage and telling then the story and they will most likely quote you to do a reset/ rewrite of the CODE for the Bose adaptation, if they know what they are doing. If they have no idea... just find somewhere else.

Problem is, I don't think you can make the correction to the version number without access to Audi data.

You will have triggered component protection, which requires a trip to the Audi dealer to be sorted.

I have exactly the same problem on my 2011 Q7 with 3G high. updated firmware and maps (via ebay) now balance/fade don't work and the sat nav instruction and handsfree audio only comes through the passenger footwell speaker.

I don't have a solution I'm afraid but very interested if anyone else does - short of going to a d£££aler.

    Fixed it!

I won't go on for too long, but it took me the best part of 9 hours... must admit, I did do some shortcuts which I thought might work but didn't and thus the long time.

I'm sure the following can be done in maybe half the time or less. but here goes.

Please note this is a working solution for Audi A6 - C7 MY2012 with 3GP HDD NAV and BOSE DSP audio system.

1st enable the 'Green menu' via VCDS or script (I do not have this, only VCDS).

go into green menu and Delete the NAV Database and reboot mmi, then back into green menu to delete the NAV partition and re-boot mmi

Then again back into the green menu to perform an emergency update with the last know working firmware - in my case it was 8R0-906-961-AM

This will put back the minimum required, but will not over write newer versions in the list as it's not overwriting all of them to begin with only some required bits.

The next step once mmi had booted up, was to re-enable the green menu via VCDS as the code gets overwritten. Once done, go into the green menu, go to swdl and then check 'user defined mode' hit the back key and then car to exit menu.

go into the proper engineering menu and run the same update again. This time where it says 'standard' you can now pick 'user defined'.

Here is the annoying bit... ignore the bits that's show N/A - we don't need these. The ones with a N, you need to go into them and check the current version against the update version, it will look like similar to this 53 -> 52, the check box will be unticked, you need to tick it for each one that is dropping version number.

Anything going up in version will have a Y next to it, but best to check them all out and tick/untick as required. One thing to look out for is any version can not drop to 0, if you see this and tick it, it will error so best not to do that.

The aim is to get the mmi unit to the base firmware level you used for the emergency update. Go through with the update, the mmi will re-boot a few times, and at the end it will give you all OK, re-boot and then cancel documentation, re-boot again into the mmi as normal. Hopefully the Bose Fader/Balance should now work as normal.

Again, re-enable the green menu via VCDS as the code gets overwritten. Once done, go into the green menu, go to swdl and then check 'user defined mode' hit the back key and then car to exit menu.

Go into the proper engineering menu and run the 2nd update, for me it was 8R0 906 961 BM - v518

Here is the KEY bit, when updating, go to 'user defined' and this time uncheck everything under the 'BOSE' section. AT NO POINT DO WE WANT TO UPDATE THIS BIT!!! Run the update as normal leaving everything as is apart from the BOSE section. Again after some mmi re-boots, all should be good.

Repeat the same process from enabling the green menu to the update again for the next version - for me it was 8R0 906 961 BT

and again for 8R0 906 961 CD and finally for 8R0 906 961 DG v770. EACH AND EVERY TIME, ENABLE GREEN MENU, SELECT THE 'USER DEFINED MODE' THE WHEN DOING THE UPDATE, ALWAYS UNCHECK THE **BOSE** SECTION.

It is optional for you to go to v783 but I did not as I wanted to use the Euro 2015 maps v 6.20.4

Some say these work on 783, others say they don't. I personally didn't want to take the risk as it would be doing the above all again!!! NO THANKS

So now we are on v770, go into the proper engineering mode again, and this time we are going to install the maps/NAV DB etc.. this for me was 8R0 060 884 CH ECE 6.20.4

leave everything as is, most will be N/A but the bits that are S or Y will be the ones it needs to install. Let it do its thing, few reboots and 1.5 hours later we are done.

now copy the Carson 3GP activation script for 770 to a sd card. Wait for your mmi to boot, give it 3 mins or so and it will say no navigation active.

pop in the sd card, after about 30 sec, you see the carson screen, press any key, the screen goes back to normal with the message. DO NOT TOUCH IT AS THE SCRIPT IS DOING ITS THING IN THE BACKGROUND!!

you will see the completed carson screen, press any key, remove the sd card and reboot mmi.

Thus conclude my epic journey to fixing my BOSE DSP, upgrading the mmi and getting newish maps.

To finish, I did find a local garage (not a dealer) who would have fixed my issue for me at a cost of 50 GBP and a few hours wait. The reason is that the updates are done in conjunction with an audi portal and it's this that will do any specific device recoding on the fly!

I suspect that Component protection may work in different ways and this the online link required.

moving forward when the cost of v900 + 6.23.x 2016 maps comes down, I may go the official route, but for now this will do. I've not had an upgrade in 4 years so let me bask in my glory for now. Good Luck and I hope this very rough, of the top of my head, late night guide may help other Brother/Sisters in the same boat as me.

    Good night

oh sorry, almost forgot. If you have VCDS, then run the fault finder on 5F S V M, google it and you will find instructions and a calculator thing to correct the fault and clear it from your system.

There is also a Russian script out there which will delete the log files so no trace of the updates being done when taking to a dealership etc... but I have not done this.

    Hello, great post!!

I followed exactly those steps, but even selecting user defined at the time of the upgrade, I could not check the versions that I want to downgrade. I have to do something else to allow me to check?

    Best Regards
    Alberto
