Hey up, if I've wopped this on the wrong foum, please feel free to move it.
Stuck a £500 deposite on a Passat at the weekend, due to pick it up tomorrow from a Volkswagen Franchise - -I asked who I should make the bankers cheque out to and was told I could only pay the balance - £10,000, using my debit card !!! Now, am I the only pauper here who does not have 10k in his current account ??? I stated that a Bankers Draft (or is that draught?) is as good as cash but they wouldn't have it - -"too many cancelled after cars collected" was thrown at me.
What kind of company only does business this way ?? I could've lived with this if the salesman had told me on Monday - - but he gave the impression that I should've known and all car showrooms operate this way . Do they ?? Am I being a **** ???

    I'll get me coat - -

OK, don't mean to harp on ( I do really thats why I'm writing) - -just got this from Halifax site, which I will go and show these guys at Volkswagen :-

Bankers drafts once drawn cannot be stopped.

CHAPS (Clearing House Automated Payments System) is a method of sending usually high value payments (e.g. for the purchase of a car), and the beneficiary can be credited on the same day.

    I rest my case M'Lud

I bet it because they get charge for presenting a banker draft!!!

I paid for my last car from a garage with a bankers draft ok as it is as good as cash...unless forged!!!

I think it's just the insecurity of not knowing if the bankers draft presented to them is genuine or not.

Is it not possible to use the funds where you were going to draw the bankers draft from and transfer them to your current account? Then you can use your debit card - everyones a winner

if I trnsfer funds from Building Society to current account, it ain't instant so would be a delay so could not pick up car tomorrow.
Re bankers Draft - I offered to let their accountants come with me to the Building Society and see me get the Bankers Draft.l
I am bending over backards here just to give them me money - -

Gonna see what they say tomorrow - to be quite honest, as good as the motor is, if I had not given them a deposite I would walk away. Will speak to Barclay Card tomorrow and try and up my credit limit and use that - - how cool would that be, buying a car on a credit car - - -yeah, baby

    Will update tomorrer - - - - -

    two further options
    1) assuming you are paying a fee for bankers draft... find out from your BS how much it costs to do a same day CHAPS transfer to your current account, then you can use debit card.
    2) If your bankers draft is costing you very little, deposit that into your current account using the draft, then use your debit card. Surely the bank won't refuse it. If it does then it is undermining the whole point/convenience of a bankers draft.

Depending how desparate you are for that particular car... and how much the dealers want your custm... get them to wait for you.

Cars don't exactly sell like fruit & veg!

I paid for my last car with a personal cheque... A banker's draft, I always thought, was as good as cleared funds. I'd be quite curious and concerned as to why he won't take the bankers draft. I did pay for a previous car on credit card. The funds were in my savings and I paid my credit card in full every month by direct debit so I knew so long as I transferred my savings in time for the bill, I'd be okay and I'd also managed to keep the money in one of my accounts for an extra couple of weeks.

I don't know what the answer is for you because the salesman is just Wrong. The bankers draft cannot be stopped and what, have people managed many times to steal cars from him using this method? Give false names and addresses, hand over a piece of paper they claim is a bankers draft then drive off into the sunset, laughing and counting their spoils?

    Puzzling

It IS a proper dealer isn't it? It's not some bloke with a scam?!!
