Hi all,new to the forum and this is my first post.

The engine 2.0tfsi code BWE has loud rattle through most of the rev range including idle.

It appears worse when cold and sounds from the right hand side rear of the engine when looking from under the bonnet.

I have changed the cam chain tensioner which has not improved it.

The pump tappet is in good order so is the chain. The noise came on suddenly whilst driving.

    Any help/suggestions appreciated.

    Thanks Malc.

Engine rattles definitely aren't good, especially if you've had a check that it isn't anything silly (bit of plastic or heat shield that has come loose).

I'm hoping someone with some better knowledge can pipe in here, but I would be concerned about oil supply issues. The older engines had a oil pick up pipe that could get blocked and caused major issues. I may be off the mark on this one, but it is one of the major issues to watch out for (as it leads to oil starvation for the engine).

Other thing to do would be to look at some VCDS/VagCom data to see if there is anything unusual on error codes, fuel trims, live data logging etc - but you may be best off heading to somewhere decent that does diagnosis.

could be the pick up pipe in the sump blocked, thus engine has little oil pressure. you have 2 options though, either stop using the car and find out whats wrong or drive it until it goes bang. first thing to do is an oil pressure test and go from there, but chances are the sump will need to come off.

Hi the noise is more of a tin type noise.I would suspect a swirl flap issue but don't think this engine has them.
only fault code is air leak on evap valve.

    cheers malc.

Maybe the alternator free wheel pulley? I had a noise develop in my engine a few weeks ago; my wondering as to what it was ranged from lower engine cover panel loose to power steering to something serious in the heart of the engine. Experts at local indie Audi specialist pinpointed it straightaway - loose alternator pulley. Not uncommon with B7s, they said. Replaced, not a weird engine noise since!

The cam follower for the high pressure fuel pump is known to wear on the early engines which is located at the right rear. I've just brought one. £35. have a look on youtube for a replacement tutorial.

Hi all, finally found the noise, dropped the oil and it was full of metal.
Removed sump to find balance shaft gear dropping to pieces, now just got to sort it.
    Thanks to those that contributed.
