Well I did mine this weekend and the plunger attachment had broken along with the fixing pin to the other end!! Pah! Anyway, I put some thick wire through to solve that problem and put the plunger back in with a hole in the top to allow ease of opening as it's fragile. I've put a cube of old sponge between the support post and the actual plunger so it does not come out!! Crude I know. It seems to work, although I keep checking when closing that the light has gone off!!! May have to get a new one!!

Tip,remove the plunger and put it in a vice and spray some wd40 into the slide and pump it like mad and you will find the glove box will open alot easier and shut easier to.

Same thing happened to me on a 2003 A4.

There's a small lever which sticks out of the back of the latch mech which slides the mechanism sideways to open the door, which breaks off.

If you remove the side panel (as per Marco34's reply above) you can push the latch inwards and open the door. Remove the glove box completely by undoing the 6 x 8mm bolts.

Then if you look at the side of the lid adjacent to the latch there's a small torx screw which holds the latch in place in the lid. You can then extract the broken latch and replece it. BTW there is a black glove box complete on e-bay today - item number (130164772945) currently going for less that a fiver - BUT, it has no latch mechanism....

I read this post last night as I had a very stiff to open and close glovebox on my 2006 A4. I put it into the main dealer (under warranty) and when I picked the car up the glovebox opened and closed with ease.
After reading this post I went into the garage to check the glovebox light was working, and guess what, no light.
I removed the side panel and all they had done was disconnect the bloody operating arm.................

I did the WD fix and re-assembled the unit and it now works fine. I will be visiting the dealers just as soon as I can assemble enough french swear words to get my point across.

I must say that i see the glove box problem quite alot and repeat failure is normally down to the plunger not being worked free from the first failure, and thats in the dealers. Some techs are just daft in the head

Yep i just had exactly the same thing happen to me, a sorta crack sound followed by the sound of flapping glovebox, stupid thing £15 for a plunger and switch sounds mega expensive think i might have to use a cable tie too lol
i blame the missus for this breaking (even tho she was not in the car)

thought id take some pictures of what was causing this glovebox to fly open undampened, its a really easy fix woo! just did it in about a minute.

obviously the loud crack was from whatever was going through that hole holding the glovebox and the dampening mechanism together.
so i stuck a cable tie through it and it holds just fine, better than buying some bit from vdub thats going to cost you and arm and a leg

not that u need to see what a cable tie looks like but i thought id put this picture in anyhow
