So I've just had the heartbreaking news that my Bora is a write off due to bent chassis, broken gearbox, wishbone and driveshaft. It was in really good condition for an 04 plate and had only done 60k miles, and as far as I'm aware the engine is still workiing fine. I've been keeping my eye out for an A4 B6 with high mileage in the hopes that I could transplant the engine from my Bora into it as I've heard that Audi and VW use the same engines, but I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on the matter. If this was atall possible, would it have to be a 1.8t A4? Could it be a 1.8 SE? Any help or advice would be appreciated, thanks!

The engines are mostly the same but the problem lies in that the Bora (Jetta) with the 1.8T is front wheel drive with no AWD option thus the engine is transversely mounted. The A4 (and the Passat), which can be FWD or AWD and in both cases the engine is mounted longitudinally. It's this difference that prevents you from swapping engines between the cars you indicated.

I believe it comes down simply that the blocks are different (while internally they're the same) because the mounting points are different.

Ah I see. If I was to transplant the engine into another bora say, would it have to be another 1.8t? Would it be easier to list the types of Bora I couldnt fit the engine in?

That works likely be the most expedient... Keeping the same size engine. Then there would be no need to hunt down the parts that would be needed (mounts, downpipe, etc).

I'm not sure if the Bora is the same, but with the A4, the crankshafts can be different based on the type of transmission (auto, manual or cvt).

To keep it simple, try and find a car that's the same in terms of engine and transmission as yours. If you want to experiment, you'll need to research a lot to find out what you will need.
