Audi A4 2002 AWX Engine 120k

In September the engine tried to destroy itself when the stud retaining the cambelt tensioner sheared. The stud (which was replaced at the last belt change was genuine VW) had travelled 20k miles in 3½ years.

Of course this resulted in the usual damage to the head/valves etc.

The head was professionally rebuilt using new valves, guides, camshaft and shaft bearings.

However since the engine was reassembled I have experienced 3 problems.

1. Reluctance to start in the mornings
2. Regular limp mode
3. 20% increase in fuel consumption/exhaust smoke

The front of the vehicle was put into the service position to recheck the timing (which was correct)

Still the same symptoms.

The vehicle was taken to the local diesel specialist who made all the usual checks, compression, oil pressure etc but could find nothing amiss. During this process the injectors were removed to ensure their correct fitment.

Still the same symptoms.

The head was then removed again as it was suggested that there may be a blockage in the fuel gallery. This was done professionally and cylinder head re- rebuilt.

Still the same symptoms.

The vehicle then was booked into the local VW main dealer who diagnosed a failure in the turbo unit which was subsequently replaced.

Still the same symptoms
.

The injectors were removed again and tested and this time found to be under fueling. So reluctantly I decided to have the injectors professionally reconditioned.

Still the same symptoms.

Vag-com can detect no fault codes and the local dealer was unable to recover any fault codes. Before the failure of the stud the car, which I’ve had for 8 years, was running perfectly.

I’m sure someone out there knows the answer to this. Please help.....
