Need Help Deciding on Best Course of Action - DPF/Sensor

Wife's A4 B8 2.0TDI is crying (again). Engine management lamp has flashed up a couple of days ago with

5162 - Diesel Particle Filter; Differential Pressure Sensor (
P245300 [101] - Implausible Signal


5188 - Diesel Particle Filter
P246300 [175] - Excessive Soot Accumulation

I cleared the fault on VCDS, monitored the pressure sensor and soot loading and took the car for a good run on the motorway. Soot loading was around 10-20mg, engine management lamp stayed off.

I have come home from work this evening to be informed that the light is on again and the "coil" light is also flashing. Message on dash gives a warning about DPF and to consult manual.

I have just done a fault code scan again this evening the results of which are below.


I really don't want to have to spend a fortune on a new DPF nor waste cash on professional DPF cleaning if it is not going to help. From the little on have done on the web to research this problem it looks like there is a chance it is just a pressure sensor that is at fault. Soot loading is now 35-45mg......is this too high to force a regen?

Any help appreciated (this evening) as we need to use the car Thursday and Friday. I suspect it has kicked into limp mode now too.

Where is the differential pressure sensor located? Does it need to be recoded/adapted after installation or will it self learn?

I am getting there slowly but would appreciate it if any one could reassure me of my assumptions and direction! I have now located the sensor in the engine bay and the part costs £40 from Europarts.

I have also driven the car this morning. It started off in limp mode and then after 500m of driving back to "normal" performance. I drove the vehicle to my workplace which was a 70minute "spirited" drive and logged the DPF measurement blocks via VCDS. At the end of the drive all error lamps were off on the dash board but the CAN had logged single fault during the drive :

I have attached a screenshot of the logging file charts. The things of note are:

- Seems to be regenerating (on a passive basis)
- Soot loading at 37g when it was in "limp" mode but subsided to about 5-10g after regeneration

Q - how often should the DPF regenerate under normal conditions? Have I got an underlying problem here EG clogged injectors, burning oil (although the engine oil levels are remaining stable)
Q - Particle Filter; difference pressure seems to remain quite stable - I would expect this to rise and fall as the soot load varies; indeed is this not how the ECU calculates the soot loading in the DPF!?? Also this parameter did not fluctuate much with engine revs.....is this normal??

Assistance would really be appreciated.

FWIW i had my DPF sensor swapped out 2 weeks ago after I had ecatly the same symptons tha you are experinceing. Yellow lights everywhere, glow plug DPF etc. EMS light stayed on and forced me to get it checked out by a good local indep that I have faith in. 30 minute swap out of DPF sensor fixed all problems and back to happy motoring again.

If you can change it for £40 parts - go ahead. small cost and it's a bit of kit that has legacy issues anyway.

OK so that is the more technically pure response. So let's do as the purist said - sawp it out for a new one.

Fixed. DPF sensor changed. As soon as I carried out the adaption I could tell it was working as I was seeing sensible values via the graphing function on VCDS. Hope the is useful to someone else.

Sorry to revive an old thread but what was he part number you used? 059906051c or 059906051A? audi quoted me £67 for the part but I've found Bosch ones for £30....
