Hi guys, recently bought a 08 b6 passat 2.0 tdi,all was fine until one day when i put the fob in to start the car, nothing happened, now, everything works as normal when i push the fob into the fob slot/reader,steering unlocks fine, then the ignition lights come on,then when i push the fob in to start it,nothing happen, after doing some testing,i noticed that with the ignition on,my starter was trying to start the car which eventually burnt out the starter,i replaced the starter and the car still tries to start just with the ignition on,so basically what i had to do was disconnect the wire going to the starter and wire a push to start switch inside the car to start it,i still use the key fob to switch the ignition on,does anyone have any ideas as to why the car tries to start with just the ignition on,i did replace the fob reader and still it didn't solve the problem.i'm stumped as to why the ignition is sending power to the starter with just the ignition on,any help would be greatly appreciated.

Get a VCDS scan as it may reveal electrical fault codes which will narrow down the problem. Could be a short in the ignition switch perhaps or wiring to the starter but guessing is not really the way forward at this stage.

Had a full scan done with vcds from a mate who has the genuine ross tec lead and no faults were detected so i'm completely baffled by it,i have no plans taking it to the *********** as they would probably charge me an arm and a leg to find the problem so at this stage,im open to any solutions other people may have or ill just have to suffer on using the push to start button to which i'm getting quite used too at the moment.

As you have changed the starter which on the B6 would be the pre-engaged type with the solenoid being part of the starter unit you can almost certainly rule out the starter and solenoid which leave the ignition switch itself or wiring. Check to ensure the earth cables from the starter and gearbox are making good contact with the bodywork where they are bolted. If the wiring is good (you can test with a multimeter) then your ignition unit is probably faulty and maintaining live feed to the starter via the ignition feed to the solenoid instead of only when the fob is push in to the start position after which the circuit should once again be broken when the fob returns to the ignition position.

I'll check my earths are good and clean them tomorrow,i have however tried a new fob reader/ignition from a working car and that didn't make any difference,i did purchase another fob reader/ignition from ebay so ill give that a try also.

I never checked the steering lock martin so i'll have a look at it tomorrow and see if everything looks ok,is it easy to remove the cover on the box on the steering or is it a sealed unit ?

    relay.jpg

Just an update to my starting problem, the reason my car was trying to start with just the ignition on was caused by the relay circled in red in the pic,i changed it today, connected everything back to the way it was originally and problem sorted.I might add that my car was a uk import so the relay pictured just behind the drop down compartment on the drivers side may be different to other 08 b6 models.
