    Hi

I have now ordered a cleaned off the shelve turbo from Northen turbo centre and should take delivery today and wat to get on with fitting it !

I have looked at the autodata time for this job and it states remove and install under 2 hours.

Which is not long but i cannnot work out how much stuff i have to remove to get it off!!

Do i need to remove the intake manifold then exhaust one or with the air box removed will the turbo come out with the manifolds in place?

Also what gaskets will i need to complete the job? as i may need to order them before hand!!

    Plz anyone help asap

    Shane

Many of the Passat TDI turbos have a seperate exhaust manifold and turbo, so you should be able to detach the turbo from the manifold.

I dont think there are any gaskets.
I think the turbo comes off without taking the manifold's off. there are 3 nut's and 2 are hard to to get at.
2 oil pipe's one at the top (feed) one at the bottom (return).
    1 bracket underneath.

    Hi

    thanks for the reply

I did the job today it took me approx 2hrs to do

The manifold did not have to be removed i did renew the gasket from yurbo to cat and oil feedback pipe gasket.

It was not a bad job to do and the car has so much more grunt now

    BUT

While i was under the car i found both cv boots split so had to replace them too which took longer than the turbo

2 hours turnaround is quick for the turbo! well done. Did you need to replace the oil feed pipe or did you get away without crushing it when you undid the gland nut ?. I did and when fitting the new pipe it took ages to reach behind the engine to fit one of the support bracket bolts. Does anyone reading this know where I can get a new actuator for the Garrett GT17 ?.

I crushed my pipe and it was an absolute pain to replace, I left the P clip off the pipe at the back of the engine.

Two hours is very quick it too me about 9 but I did take the inlet and exhust manifold off because I needed to see if the engine had ate the turbo.

I got away with the oil feed pipe but when i first tryed it was trying to undo the union from the turbo.

i do work in a garage and have use of a wheel free ramp which helps !!

As i say it took longer to do two cv boots!!

of course in a garge you do have lots of tools too

Like a socket ended spanner to remove the top manifold to turbo nut which was hard to get too without.

After 6 long months of searching for an answer to the power loss on my Passat I have found the answer. To recap: the car was gutless right from the off so it was quite distinct from most of the symptoms that crop up on this forum. I borrowed a MAF sensor (no change), fitted a new N75 valve (the one that provides vacuum to the turbos VNT mechanism) , no change. I cleaned the EGR valve and associated plumbing, and at one stage discovered a split hose in the tamdem pump which was giving intermittent survo assistance to the brakes (very scarey when steering at slow speed as the steering servo would rob all the vaccum assistance leaving nothing for the brakes!!). My search continued by cleaning the turbo's VNT but found nothing to suspect that this was causing the problem. Three months hence and my pateince was wearing thin with this car but I thought I'd try the MAP sensor as this feeds a voltage back to the ECU according to the rate of flow to the inlet manifold. Fitting a new MAP sensor at £41 total has cured the fault and i am over the moon. Thanks to the bloke on the forum who suggested to me that these were quite cheap to replace as I would have thought otherwise.
