    Hi all,

Just wondering what other 272 Black Edition Saloon owners are getting MPG wise. Our car has done over 4000 miles now and is showing a long term average of just over 36 mpg. Been resetting the short term trip computer before long journeys and have been studying the MPG, best ever was 48 mpg on a 130 mile motorway run. However, general driving seems to be about 33 mpg. Our old 3.0 TDI Multitronic used to average 45 in town. Admittedly it wasn't Quattro and it wasn't on 20 inch wheels but was significantly more efficient, even though manufacturer's MPG claims were lower than the new car's.

So, I just wondered whether this is similar to other owners or whether our car isn't being as efficient as it should be.

    Cheers,
    Danny.

Yep, i get very similar to what you're getting, with exactly the same miles on the clock. Average is 34, best after a long 250 mile run is 47. around town short journey is 32 - 35. This is all taken from the on board computer. Can't be ***** doing the calculation manually as the difference is insignificant to me really. All with car set mostly to auto in drive select.

A lot of this depends on how its driven, I'm sure it would be possible to get it better but if I found this that important i would have bought a Prius or something.

    Thanks for your reply,

Glad to hear that our car is performing similarly to another. Our car is usually set to Auto in drive select as well, tried it in efficiency on a long run and didn't notice a huge difference in MPG, although fairly sure the car was coasting more.

    Cheers,
    Danny.

I often think I'll try in dynamic for a longer run, but then when I start I don't like being in too low gear so change it back. However I'm sure it wont make it any better.

Out of curiosity I've also tried efficiency once but didn't see any significant difference in economy.

You can force it into "top gear" using the paddles... With the ZF tiptronic dynamic (or sport) settles into only using 7 of the 8 gears but you can force it to 8th on the paddles. I expect the same is true of the s-Tronic - you can make it select 7th instead of staying in 6th.

    Long term 38mpg
Best is 46mpg on a 60 mile journey.
I've got 19s and recently fitted 18 winters wheels/tyres. The winters seems a little more efficient and comfortable.
I also found efficiency mode makes little difference other than it feels like driving on 3 cylinders.

When I say longer run I mean 100 miles or more on motorway etc, in this case its pointless doing this, may as well leave in Auto and just pull the stick down if I need it, for whatever reason. I get it for short nippy blasts.

I'd always thought that diesels don't return their best economy until beyond 20k+ miles? That may of course not be the case now.

Albeit I have a C6 with 114k on it that's returning 40mpg and 720 on a (admittedly larger) tank...DIS can give you an indication as to economy...but that's it with only a brim to brim calculation being accurate. I know for instance my economy DIS wise is 5% out when fitted with OEM tyres (245/40/18) when I have 245/45/18's on it's less than 1% out and the speedo is accurate.

I've not driven the 272PS but I've reasonable experience of the 177PS, 204PS, 245PS and 313PS diesels and they are all great on fuel economy on steady state journeys eg. Motorway, A-road, dual carriageway but they were all utterly pants on fuel economy in town, even the stop/start cars. If you're getting poor fuel economy then the first place I would look is whether you sit in traffic much. If so, that's almost certainly the culprit.

Thanks everyone for all your replies, it would seem that the fuel economy in our car is where it should be. Glad to hear that there seems to be nothing abnormal about our car's efficiency.
    Cheers,
    Danny.
