Hi people this is my first post here so apologies if I get the etiquette wrong!

i have mk 5 golf that initially I couldn't get the bonnet shut again on. This stopped the front wipers working and also caused the alarm to trigger when I tried to lock it up. A bit of digging on this forum informed me that this was all related to the micro switch in the bonnet catch. So...took it out carefully and cleaned within an inch of it's life, put it back and hey presto - the bonnet now shuts properly and the wipers work again!

However the flick and spray at the front won't work now!. It works fine for the rear window..pump and wiper all good at the rear - but at the front I can only turn the wipers on, I can't spray or do the small series of 3 or so wipes by pulling the stalk towards me. There is no noise at all from the pump when I try to spray - it's like the pump doesn't know I'm pulling the stalk.I have checked fuses, but so far am unable to determine the correct fuse, so I checked them all.

This is driving me nuts...I enjoy problem solving but this has made me waste my whole weekend trying to figure it out!
Am I right in thinking that there is one pump with 2 outlets that serves front and rear? If this is the case then I guess the pump is ok as it works at rear...and the fuse must be ok?

any help very gratefully received 🤘🏻

Double check fuse 42 in the dash side fuse board and make sure it has power, but if it didn't lots of other things would not work. The motor is run in either direction two two relays so obviously one way is OK so the "double washer pump relay 1" known as J729 isn't working OR being commanded by the J519 onboard supply control unit. You would need a diagnostic system to be able to go into measuring blocks of the steering column controller and J519 to check what the switch is doing.

Thank you for your help! I have come across the fuse 42 thing on several forums - however there is no fuse at all in slot 42! It did work a couple of days ago so I'm figuring I don't a need a fuse there altho I did pop one in anyway just to check.
Incidentally this all started after having the stereo removed to unplug the cd changer to insert a connects2 iPhone adapter in its place - all works perfectly)
The day after the alarm kept going off - presumably due to the bonnet catch being grungy but now wondering if this is connected to something else some how?
Car going into garage this week for vcds but would love to save the cash and fix it myself!

So it is a 2005 model with a BAG engine. The "Basic Equipment" current flow diagram insists there should be a fuse in position 42 in the right dash side fuse panel. Are there two pin locations in that slot, one a split bar and the other looking like open lips?

Yes I think so - I can confirm tho that there has never been anything in that slot! A few forums have mentioned that fuse, but the general answer regarding that is that the bay 42 is empty on a lot of models. Confusing! Thanks for getting back to me btw...

Looks like you have a 15amp fuse in position 42.

Doh yes you're right sorry - was getting confused with another thread I have going sorry. I've been pulling that many fuses .....
However I have tried several brand new 15A fuses in that slot to no avail. I was thinking as the one pump does front and rear, and it works fine at rear could it still be a fuse issue?

No, it was a long shot but you have ruled it out, you need to work with a diagnostics system now.
