Question is: does this type need to be installed at TDC with the crank locking tool? I have read conflicting posts that it doesn't.... I've gone this far and would hate to have dramas at the 11th hour!

Yes I always lock the timing and have done this job several times now. Cam lock pins are difficult to engage fully into the head, must go back into the machined head holes, due to tight tolerances and crank lock tends to be the opposite with slightly too much tolerance so important to double check the timing.

My view is that when the unit is refitted the balance shafts sit flat due to their weight distribution and as locked by the alignment block there needs to be a second reference point for the counter balance of the crankshaft torsional forces. Without the timing locked and the balance shaft alignment preserved in the unit these torsional forces which act at certain times during the crankshaft rotation, will not be countered at the right times and essentially the balancing process compromised.

Have I sent you, or do you have, the VW workshop process for this job? If not PM me your email address and I'll send it over on PDF.

great - thanks Mitch. I'll pm you now. I'll jump online and get a set of the crank locks and also new bolts for the assembly as I've heard they are important to change also...
    Cheers

    Hi Gaz,

Could you advise if the balance shaft change is the same on a A6 2007 as the Passat? The guide you post on forums I believe is for the PASSAT? I can not find an A6 guide anywhere.

I am purchasing the A6 this weekend with. 148k, full service history, no history of balance shaft being done. Should I stay away from it?
