    Hey all,

I have a 2009 VW Passat with the 2.0 CR 170bp common rail engine and about 3 months ago it started leaking coolant,

I topped up with blue coolant even though there was pink coolant in it and all was okay since but during the week it started to loose coolant again rapidly, I took the car to my local garage and they replaced the radiator as it was leaking at the sides where the metal & plastic joins (no sign of physical damage either)

the following day I went for a hour long motorway drive and all was fine, the car was running like a clock at 90degrees all the way,

I stopped at a toll bridge and went to drive on again but the engine started chucking / fluttering in 1st 2nd & 3rd then started to loose power eventually it stalled!

I was stuck on the side of the motorway but knew there was an exit and a car park about half a mile from me so I started the car again by keeping the throttle fully pressed otherwise it would stall,

I nursed it along but there was a loud rapping banging noise coming form the engine, the oil light started to flash & beep but I knew it was full of oil,

the coolant level remained full, wasn't discoloured and was warm to touch,

any ideas on what I could be looking at.... sounds like the engine is shot but with 130k on the clock, full service history and timing belt done recently I'm finding it hard to digest this!

the car is back with the garage who fitted the radiator but I keep thinking of the following questions

could there be something wrong with the engine to cause the rad to go in the first place...?

could I be very lucky and have a flywheel, EGR or head gasket issue instead of a wrecked engine...?

time will tell but any comments would be greatly appreciated,

    thanks.

    Rob.

oil light flashing is the clue as to whats probably happened. try searching for oil pump problems. the radiator went because its 7 years old and done 130k, simple as that.

if the engine is wrecked and I have to source a second hand one fom a salvage yard am I limited to anther Passat engine or are these engines used on some of the Audi or Skoda models,

my engine is the 2.0 170bp CR Common Rail type, the one thats affected by the VW emissions debacle (EA189 build engine.... I think)

I don't know how much Blue anti-freeze you added (and this added to your other woes) but that's probably mixed with your G12+ (pink) to form a gel. Dependent on the amounts that gel can solidify to a mud and cause at least water pump failure -- certainly circulation blockage.
Hope that the replacement radiator installers did a full flush out and refill with either G12, G12+, or G13 50% mix?

Sourcing a second hand engine is going a bit too far at this point -- you'd have IMMO coding and ECU coding problems to contend with, it's not like just dropping in another lump as we could do in days of old. Find out what's wrong with your existing -- see if it will turn, any oil pressure when/if it cranks? Any IGN?

Good luck! And keep us updated on progress?

Golden rule for cars with pink antifreeze is never ever mix it with blue or green as they chemically react with each other. Not sure this would have caused your engine problem but it wouldn't help one bit. It is pointless speculating until you have had the engine examined, the ECU scanned for any tell tale related fault codes and the exact cause of the knocking determined. It is unlikely an EGR fault would cause engine knocking to the extent you have described. Dual Mass Flywheel failure is a possibility, head gasket issue less likely to cause the instant knocking symptoms you describe but combined with the coolant mixing faux pas not to be ruled out. Mechanical failure of other internal parts is a strong possibility (cams, crank, shell bearings, rockers, etc.).

Let us know what they find.

No updates yet other than a phone call just now from the garage, they are going to drop the sump in the morning for a look see,

going on the noise its making they old me to expect a call in the morning to say the engine is cooked!

they plugged it in and saw some faults including the oil light alarm etc,

they also said it would be no harm to make a few calls in the morning for a replacement engine saying mine was the CBB engine 170bhp and I could choose from the following cars...

VW Golf, Passat, Passat CC, Scirocco, Skoda Superb, Audi A3 and an Audi TT from 2008 onwards but obviously I need to get a 2010 engine,

I asked him to check the oil pump shatf to see if its the 77mm type,

    more to follow....

Arr I read on, been cooked.

I don't think there is a match but you try breaker comparison sites, they use breakers all over so may have more luck
