    Hello all,

Been lurking for a while now but posting for first time.

Bought an unloved black 2005 3.0 TDI Quattro S line with 140k+ on the clock about a month and a half ago. I had the heater valve issue already and with the help from this forum and a youtube video it's now working very much enjoying driving it around and have had couple of slightly longer trips in it already and love how it just eates the miles away.

Couple of things have now come up that I'd like a bit of help figuring out:

A: I believe I have the injector issue The car starts smoking like crazy once it's fully warmed and idling for 5 or so minutes.

Q1: Despite it being very embarrassing is it causing any extra damage?

Q2: I'm going to beg/hire/purchase VCDS and as I understand reading values from banks 72 - 77 will let me know which injector(s) are at fault. I've seen bunch of posts about this and I believe Gupsterg has posted a lot regarding this including some handy guides (yay and a million thank yous!), now I believe I saw a guide or an image somewhere that explained how the values from 72 - 77 map to cylinders and the cylinder locations in the car. Despite my feverish searching I can't find that guide/image again, any ideas?
I know it's considered a good idea to replace all of the injectors at the same time but I'm little worried about funds at the moment and as I'm planning on replacing them myself don't mind doing them as and when they go, just need to be able to figure out how many are at fault and which ones for now.

B: Judder & Electric blip on start

Sometimes when I go to start the car (maybe 1 in 10 starts) the car either judders really quite violently or the electrics complete die down for a second completely. When either of these happens the car tends to start with less turns of the engine than normally (couple of seconds normally) and the shuddering/electrics weirdness only lasts for a second or so and after this the car runs absolutely fine. It has never failed to start so far...knocks wood and I don't think it's actually even been that close to not starting.

Possibly related issue: Again very intermittent (1 in 20/30 starts) the passenger side headlight does not come on, car shows that there's a bulb failure on passenger side, this will remain for the entire duration of the drive and the light stays off. If I turn the car off and back on the light comes on and no errors at all and everything's happy again.

Any responses much appreciated and if you're around Camberley/Surrey area with VCDS let me know I've got some beer/wine/cash/pinecones with your name on it!

    Thanks
    .FxN

Q1) Assume outright failure will lead to loss of a cylinder?

    Q2) Is it post 63 here?: A6/C6 injector PROBLEM - Replacement/refurbished injectors possible? - Page 7

    B) If No rattle then check your battery/starter/alternator connections and voltage outputs.

Headlight, possible corrosion on contacts, passenger side more of a pain to get to than drivers as you have to move the PAS reservoir out of the way

Am sure Gup will be along to advise I'm totally wrong on the above

A 1 ) Have you done a full service yourself ie you physically changing fuel & air filter , both important for diesels .

Also have you changed the timing belt, asking garage to check timing marks ?

A 2 B ) Have you changed the clutch pedal switch ? You need to push down the clutch to start ...................

However I would be checking earth straps etc as previously pointed out .

    Could even be ignition barrel

Niall, OP needs to share if auto or manual, if the former clutch won't apply.

Also didn't think the 3.0 had a timing belt

No timing belt on the 3.0

All the smoke is not doing the engine any good, excess fuel/crud will be getting into the cats clogging them up, also reducing fuel economy & power. I wouldn't bother finding out which ones have failed they will all go the same way eventually. I fitted a used set of injectors from a 2010 engine and that fixed my smoking fault, and they only cost £500 so it can be done on the cheap.

Thanks for the reply's everyone! Sorry forgot to mention in original post that the car is auto so not just me being lazy with the clutch unfortunately.

MarkTM I think that's the first part of what I was looking for, I'm sure I've seen an image of the engine bay as well which shows how the cylinders are ordered in the car, although it could just be 123 on left and 456 on right from top to bottom.

I'll check all the earth contacts and the contacts on the light at the weekend, fingers crossed it's that simple!

B5NUT that's an excellent price, was it one's ending in BD? Been keeping eye on ebay but little worried about buying used as they could just have the problem already which would mean massive waste of monies

    Thanks

Face-lift models have the upgraded injectors from Bosch so look for those if you are buying used. I got mine new from eBay for £900 for the whole set.

I had always been led to believe that 07+ cars had the revised injectors?

That's what I was told by my AD head mechanic when I asked them about my faulty injectors. Facelift Allroads start from 08+.
