    Hi All,

I'm usually over in the B8 forum but have some questions about our A6 that we own.

We've had an intermittent fuel gauge fault - it has just read zero for a while then sometimes work. Anyway, I borrowed a diagnostic unit off a friend (nothing special but was Audi specific) so I have some resulting codes that I'd love information on. Specifically what the issue is, whether I can replace it and how urgent it is to get the problems sorted... Unfortunately I found more than just fuel sensor issues...

    1. 00438 - Fuel supply sensor 2 (G169) Error: Speed difference too great
I assume this is the issue with the gauge?

    2. Left engine mount - Solenoid Valve (N144) - Error: Open circuit

    3 + 4. Glowplug for cylinder 1 (Q10) Error open circuit
Glowplug for cylinder 6 (Q15): Error: Open circuit

    5. Intake Manifold runner control - lower stop not reached: error: value of resistance too small

    6. Please check DTC memory of instrument cluster defective
Is this referring back to error 1?

Thank you for any assistance you guys can give, it's greatly appreciate.

    Chris

Probs would help if you mentioned the year and engine size....put both your cars in your signature strip as I've done for my A6, that way peeps won't have to ask..but since you have 6 cylinders am guessing a 2.7 or 3.0.

Could you clear the faults on the diagnostic tool used?

I had the same fault on my 3.0 quattro and a fuel sender repair kit was available for around £28 from Audi

I did post the part no on another thread, when doing the work it is advantageous if you are less than half full.

IIRC it's the balancing between both sides of the tank, so if more than half-full fuel may slosh out into the passenger footwell...which you wouldn't want.

    Thanks for your reply.

    Apologies, it's a 2008 (on 57 plate) 2.7 TDI

I haven't tried clearing the fault codes - is it worth doing?

    1. google dtc 00438 , first hit is pdf with info on fix/VAG PNs/etc

    2. Using description not a DTC code =

    VAG Error Code: 17996
    EOBD II Error Code: P1588
Fault Location: Engine Mount Solenoid Valves 1\2 (N144/N145) - Open Circuit
    Possible Cause:
Wiring/Connector(s), Fuse(s). Engine Mount Solenoid Valves (N144/N145) faulty.
    Possible Solutions: Check/Replace all faulty Wiring/Connector(s). Check/Replace Fuse(s). Check/Repair Engine Mount Solenoid Valves (N144/N145).

3 + 4. Glowplug fault, Cyl.1 = when viewing engine standing at front of car first one on left, Cyl.6 = when viewing engine standing at front of car last one on right

    5. It could be swirl flap manifold fault, could be the link arms or the motor sticking or have wear.

    7. Without a log I would agree with your assessment.

I'd keep a log and then clear, from the log and if the device is pulling out data like VCDS you should be able to see a time stamp for fault thus equate if historic or current. VCDS also states frequency of fault occurrence, from that it can be assessed if it was a one of gremlin or genuine fault occurring over and over.
