3.0TDi - What Coolant?

Mrs Lyons phoned me this morning to say the DIS said the coolant level is low this morning.

Can anyone tell me what the correct coolant type is for a 2011 3.0TDi (241)? I've had a look online but to no avail. I assume it will say in the manual, but I'm over in Scotland with work today and would like to send her in to collect the correct stuff.

i would be more worried about why the coolant is low. a bit of water is better than nothing though, or send her to a dealer to get it topped up, but i would advise its looked at properly. last thing you want is a big leak developing and cooking the engine.

Agree with zollaf... where has the rest of the coolant gone?

My money is on a stone hole in the radiator.

Mix is 50/50 with water (normal)



2011 3.0 TDI My moneys on:

1.Water pump
2. EGR Valve

Both none critical if slow leak and driven normally.



If it's just a litre (2 pints) once, I'd top up with tap water (assuming you have soft tap water).
If it's not the first time, then to the garage..... but like others have said, get it checked....

The warning comes from the expansion tank sensor.... normally a couple of pints...

2 months ago I had a low level water thing happening (3.0 TDI Quattro), topped it up, 4 weeks later topped it up, another 4 weeks, top up and I booked it in as I could see fluid on the sound damper under the engine (use a torch to see). The reported back, Water pump, they replaced it and refilled the system, paid for the part, work, fluids....

1 week later I was still topping it up !!! phoned them up, booked it back in... Paid again for another bug hunt, they ended up removing the inlet manifold to get to the centre of the V6 and the small "EGR Valve" coolant return one-way valve had split and was leaking fluid. It may of been leaking initially or as they say, the water pump replaced then made it apparent there was another leak....

G12+ Coolant. 50:50 mixture. Can you see the coolant level marking ? Use soft water or ionised water ( Halfords or supermarket). If you can't see any pink coolant then you have a major leak. Do not drive any distance without topping up and then getting the leak investigated.
