Looking around the forum posts am I right in thinking that if the key blade is

ok then one can replace the other half (in this case the faulty half) with a

new good one, thereby retaining the original key and chip and all should

work ok. (Fob must be same part number).

This I found in the booklet 3.1 Passat Estate "Controls and Equipment"

"If the vehicle cannot be unlocked by pressing the opening button, it could be that the code of the key is no longer matches that of the control unit in the vehicle. This can occur if the opening button on the key is frequently pressed outside the effective range of the system".

    Synchronisation.

The radio-wave key must be resynchronized . The synchronization process must be completed with 1 minute.

    1) Press either the open or close button on your radio wave key once for approx. one second. The vehicle will remain locked. The control unit, however, recognises a valid key.

    2) Now lock or unlock your vehicle using the key.

    3) The key bite is recognised as the valid mechanical code. A new code is defined between the key and the control unit. The synchronisation procedure is complete.

This then suggests that your key blade half (with the chip) and a replacement button half (identical part number) would work with the above procedure.

    Well, my problems are sorted!

I purchased a replacement Key fob, for a few quid from eBay, took the car and all the keys to a local auto locksmith

He snapped the new and old fobs open, swapped everything around, re-programmed the "Hybrid" key and charged me precisely nothing!!

I am a truly happy man

Riven, you say he reprogrammed the hybrid key, was this the key itself or the key to the car?

I have done the same to fix my knackered keys, ie taken the button section apart and swap my working electronics to a new key, then swap over the blade. I can set the alarm and open the doors but...

...the immobiliser doesn't know about the transponder in the "new" key section, so I can't start the car. Did your key guy split apart the plastic key section and swap the transponder - as I can't see how it can be done?

My VW specialist say they should be able to match the "new" key's immo transponders to the car... but of course want to charge to "try"...

Its an early 2002 (51 plate)

I wondered about the skc, and have a plastic tag with the car details, but the format of the numbers doesn't seem to match what the doco on VAGCOM says it should?

I am pretty sure VW won't give it to me, anywhere else I can find it?

Do you have or is there a guide on how to match the keys with VAGCOM... if so I will reg my "free" copy and save the hassle of the *******.

My plastic tag had a scratch off panel, my car also has a 4 digit skc code.

I used the instructions of ross-techs website, worked a treat

    4 digit instructions

    7 digit

It was the key to the car!

The guy took the bottom half of the new key and the top(transponder half) of my existing key, clicked them together.

He then went to the car where he put another of my keys in the ignition and programmed the reassembled key to the cars ECU by pressing the buttons on the key fob.

you can match the remote part to the car manually, but a new transponder for the immobiliser can only be done using Vag-com etc with a valid login

    Many thanks!

Having checked the plastic key & tag it has on one side on a black sticker a number in this format "E123456" and the other:

    12
    012345

    are either the correct format?

It looks like something to right of the last numbers has been removed... as there is bits of "stick" left.

    Is it documented anywhere else?
