iPod problem

My new Eos has a factory fitted iPod interface, but doesn't recognise the iPod when I plug it in.
Two questions please.
Trawling various discussion pages on the web suggests that it may be that Blaupunkt (who make the radio for VW) need to produce a software update to go with the Apple update that was introduced when iTunes 7 came along. Various folk with anything from a Passat to a Nissan, have said that their ipod worked with the old software, but was not recognised when the updated to the new software.
Can anyone confirm or refute this theory?
And secondly, all the references that I have seen suggest that with the iPod connection the iPod goes in the glovebox. The socket in my Eos is in the arm rest, which incidentally is to small to accommodate an iPod!
Can anyone confirm whether the iPod interface socket should be in the glove box rather than the armrest? I suddenly start to wonder if they fitted the wrong thing at the factory!
