If you put a car... lets say a new Audi A4 2.0T onto a Rolling road and supplied a decent air flow to repesent the wind at 90 MPH and got the car upto 90MPH and had a consent supply of fuel....

How long do you think it would last with out anything going wrong or over heating??

I know when they test new engines they leave them running for about 600 miles and then turn off turn on etc... and do tests on short jouneries to test the life... but how long would you think they would last on all the time............

i know its a daft question but who knows........

... well a daft question requires a daft answer, mine is, "I dunno" ;-)
But it would probably take ages..... I reckon the first thing to go might even be a tyre, wadaya reckon?70k then a blowout is my guess! (without too much thought put into it!)

I reckon it would go on for thousands of miles at 90mph, assuming in top gear with cruise control on?

i thought maybe a tyre due to a heat build up?? bit if its a decent tyre with a good speed rating 90MPH should be good for a while

I would be shocked as anything if a tyre popped at 90mph constant. A 2.0T Audi should be fitted with Z rated tyres, good for 150mph+ I reckon decent rubber could roll along on a rolling road at 90 forever (well, until the tread wears out, metal starts poking out and it eventually pops )

ok... ok.... what happens if it was on a long life service and at 19K you stopped to top up the oil (or change you oil)... and replace the oil fliter???

    LOL!!!

    this could on and on!!

in regards to the tyres... yes there ok for 150MPH.. but a 90 MPH for 19K miles.... theres going to be more heat than anything would you say??

I can only speak from experience, but from doing 300+ mile stints at 120+ (not constant, but definitely 90+) across Germany on delimited autobahns, my tyres never got that hot that I felt the structure would collapse. I think in 20k miles though, the tread would probably wear out - but then it's not cornering is it, so not wearing as much as in general use.

My bet is - with a top up of oil, unlimited fuel, I think it would do 30,000 miles, and then the front tyres would pop due to lack of tread. I think a modern 2.0T car will cope with 90 in terms of engine components, etc very nicely. I think you need not worry about fuel filter - air filter should go to 30k, assuming the air supply from that fan is not cacked up with bits. oil? hmmm - think it could do 30k too.

I was thinking more of the tread wearing out as well. How long would a tyre last on a rolling road before the tread became illegal? 12-15k you think? So i'd have thought you could at least double that before they'd wear enough to burst, possibly even treble. The wear would be very even. (Mind you, i'm used to smaller lighter cars up until now, the tyres tended to last forever on those)
